I know I'm out of my league and probably will look foolish for my answer but this thought struck me while I was reading your post.

Could you pass the GET variables to the status bar by running a function with the onUnload that sets the window.status?

Sorry if that's a terrible answer... I tried.

InI, perhaps i can help, but after reading more than once what you asked, i still couldn't get exactly what you want!

hmm.. of course there's the XMLHTTP ActiveX object but that only works in IE.

I think the hidden frame route is your best bet.

Might be more work than you are looking for but I did once have the idea of making a hidden Flash app "control panel" type deal. (basically a flash movie that no one sees). That sends data back an forth to the server.

Like I said this may be a bit complicated but it could be controlled via JS and send text back and forth to a cgi without the page refresh.
