The fact php doesn't provide easy means to do this doesn't mean it's impossible or hard to do. One workaround: set session handlers as files. Your session data will be stored to files, and you can define the path. Files have a last modified date. Whenever a session is called, you can check the last modified info and use it to know if a long time, say one hour, has passed since the last session.
