Yes, I think it could affect the caching of pages somehow. This weekend is no weekend to me, and I should be really busy, but I'll try my best to find the time to test and answer. I really think it's important to not affect the caching of pages, but only the caching of gifs, as explained above, to avoid altering the subtle mechanics behing the grail, and also to separate burdens: isolate the part that causes problems and give it it's own solution. my 2 cents for now.
