Seeing that it's so randomized, and the fact that it's (statistically) almost impossible for anyone to reach the highest ranks, I can't think of any other reason. Just go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced, and ensure that the "Open new tabs in the background" option is checked. Or, if you only need to do this occasionally, Shift-clicking on a link also works.
