In my mind, that is sufficient grounds to lock and/or delete the thread, depending on MS discretion. Now, if Nala had just mentioned that her friend's father had been murdered and he was struggling to deal with it, that would have been a tougher call. In that case, I would probably say that the thread has as much right to exist as any other. It might make some people uncomfortable, but I don't think it would have been entirely inappropriate. Depending on your point of view, it could be just as appropriate as the recent abortion thread.
