Let some 11yo kids play the games we enjoyed 20years ago. Ouch, this whole article gave me grey hairs.

This is sad. I remember when playing those old games were cool. I was a big mario fan hehehehe. I had one of the old nintendos. Wow... Have times changed. Kids today are so spoiled. This is so sad, and I am feeling really old right now.

Modern Gaming is pure shit...Anyone old enough will admit it. Games are not fun anymore...they are full of shit, fancy graphics, borring long mumbo jumbo stories etc.

before games were fun, because they were kept as games, nowdays they are more and more like movies and are less fun to play.

Those kids need to be forced to work in coal mines. Freaking Spoiled brats....

Hehe...I was a Donkey Kong junkie! That game literally ATE my quarters...seriously.

I still get tingles, thinking about that game.

And Space Panik...man, I literally wore the skin off my thumb playing that! (The version at the Arcade had the knob broken off...hehe).

Oh well...the youth's in the Mag will never know the excitement, of being the first generation to experience Video games, and to see them develope...and their kids will put them in their rightful place!

I'm pnly 23 now but i still remember all of those games. The only ones i haven't played are the "Handheld Football" and "E.T. the Extra- Terrestrial" (but i think that's probably a good thing.)

I'm 26, and like you I haven't played to "E.T. the Extra Terrestrial" and "Handheld Football" though I doubt the latest have been released in France.

I saw one of those handheld football games at Radio Shack some months ago. The young lady behind the counter didn't know anything about them, but the older guy that works there did. He said that they were selling like mad to the older folks that used to have them. I must admit that I was tempted for a mere $15.

When I was growing up, it was mostly Galaga - not Galaxia! Every damn day after school I pumped at least $1 into that machine. If you could make it to level 20, then you were the shit. Many years later, I ran into a Galaga and decided to give it a whirl for old time sake. I easily made it to level 32 and was still going strong. Woman was ready to go, so I handed it off to a some young kid who promptly lost all of my guys in a flurry of excessive body language. Poor kid didn't stand a chance.

One the other side of the coin, there are some games that I can't play anymore. Used to be a Mario Kart freak. Man, we could beat the whole game in dinky mode. Then we moved on to Mario Kart 64 and found the first game hard to go back to. Now that I've mastered Double Dash, I have the hardest time playing regular 64.

My 6 year-old daughter is rather good at Double Dash considering her age. She actually beat me fair-n-square a few times. Why, it's almost embarressing - especially when I single her out for no mercy and she still manages to whomp me. If she learned to powerslide and use her power-ups a little smarter, I'm sure she could consistantly give me a run for my money. Then I wouldn't have to hold back on her so much. Like Ol' Chief said, ya gotta think naaasty.

^Hehe...sounds like my daughter...she likes Jak & Dexter, for the PS2. She is also heavily into Pokemon (has been for years) - I had to learn EVERY Pokemon name! O_o! And all the levels where they evolve at...what a parent does...*sigh*

Thankfully, due to my background in Vid games, she can't beat me yet (she still gives me those big, oogle eyes "Papa is the best!"), but I am sure the day is coming...

Anyone remember Defender? Wizard of Wor? I LOVED those...

Oh yeah... I remember the handheld football game... I tell you, at that age, there was absolutely nothing that beat the thrill of heading to one side of the field, waiting for the "dots" to bunch up on that side, and then go sprinting down the other side (with no indication whatsoever of how far you had gone or how far you had left to go, mind you), mashing the forward button madly and hoping to reach the end zone before the dots could get their heads screwed on straight again.

Man, I wonder if my parents still have that thing lying around...

Although, when I got into high school, my favorite arcade game was Shinobi. The pizza place up the straight had a Shinobi game, but it wasn't a stand-up version. It was one of those "coffee table" versions, where you sat on a stool and looked stright down at the screen. Perfect for setting a slice of pizza and a Coke on...

Some of the earliest games I remember, though, are Intellivision games... like the D&D game... "Somebody get this friggin duck away from me!"

I suck at Defender. Always have and always will. Something about the controls just don't sit will with me.
I remember one kid that was a savant at that game. He put one quarter in and played for several hours. He rolled it enough times to get 3 million points or something. The owner let him keep playing after closing until the kid's father finally came and got him. They put a plaque above the machine and everything.

Web, I think quite often about playing vids with my girlie. A great deal of people say that you should always let a child win. However, sometimes I go into no mercy mode and just plain crush her. I even do maniacal laughter. The way I see it, that's the only way she is going to learn to use her brain. She is going to have to come up with better strategies and maneuvers to win.

(My ex-step-dad used to kick my ass at chess all of the time. Personally, I'm glad he did because it drastically improved my game.)

I also think that smashing her gives an extra boost of self-esteem for when she does beat me fair-n-square. If she beats me all the time, then her true victories are less sweet.

When you are playing games with her, do you take the time to stop and explain your train of thought? With Double Dash, I do with with Girlie #1 quite often. I'll pause the game and explain why I didn't blast the mushroom right away or immediately fire the red shell. I've noticed that doing this has helped her think-on-her-feet ability. She's learning to take several things into account before making a split-second decision. I just hope that this helps in other areas of her life, like combat driving in winter.

My mother would shake her head if she heard this conversation.

I had a Magnavox console that ripped Atari games, Donkey Kong was Pick Axe Pete, there was a pacman ripoff, a hangman game. Intellivision was pretty cool, a friend had one and we used to play a decathalon type game on it all the time, the controllers were a bit weird and wobbly, I can still feel em if I think hard =)

Wj, I have no other choice, but to explain...she demands it. I often have to help her out with Pokemon...or Jak & Dexter...and she always asks "How did you do that?" So I show her, and then I tell her to try it...this continues, until she has it down...until the next "Papa! Help me!"...hehe.

Personally, I have noticed, that her problem-solving skills have become quite good, and her math skills, as well. And she has taken an interest in reading (from reading all that text in Pokemon).

I personally find that playing Vid games, within reason, mixed with outdoor activities, and good "quality time" with the family is a good mix.

And yeah, when I win, I sometimes rub it in (but only half-heartedly) "Oooohhhh, ah stomped choo!" "Did not!" "Did too!" hehe...it normally fires her on, to new heights, when keep within reason.

That was a great read!

My favorite "old" game was Asteroids. I was a master I could play all day on one quarter. I would get extra ships all the way across the top of the screen and I could hand the game off to a little kid that was admiring my mastery, go get a coke, and come back in a few minutes and pick up where I left off. Ah yes, those were the ... wait a minute I was about to utter a cliche that old people utter.

My favorite "old" game is Adventure. could complete the entire game in 184 steps.

Anyone remember Zork? Now there was a great game on the pdp-8.

Does any one remember that game on the pdp-0 with a star in the middle of the screen and two ships trying to shoot each other out of space?

How about a more modern game like "Chip's Challenge" or Enigma?

i remember having a trs-80 and playing this horrible text-based adventure game called nauga with my my little brother. sort of a d&d-ish hit points type game if i remember. after that we finally got a nintendo, and it was all about kung fu

fave new games: anything from oddworld inhabitants. their blending of gameplay and personality is simply brilliant. if any of y'all have a playstation pick up abe's odysee or abe's exodus for like 10 bucks somewhere and give it a whirl, its the most entertaining side-scroller you could ever play. problem-solving galore, and how can you not love a game where you can possess and control your own farts?

There are some thing wrong there, as the first tetris was just black and white, and the blocks had no bevels.

I am certainly much of an old skool, I am 19 and grew up mostly with Snes, although I did had an atari and a Nes. I love many old skool games, like Bubble Bobble, Pong, Tetris, Super Mario Bros 2 and some of the games and Watch gallery series, but i certainly love much more some newer games, just like Capcom and SNK fighting game series, GTA, Blizzard licenses (SC, WC2/3, Diablo 1 and 2), Final Fantasy Tactics advance, Sonic advance 2, Wario land 2-4, Duungeons and Dragons: Shadows over Mystara, etc. My main reason is not because of the graphics, but rather some of them have a very extensive gameplay, and dont let to furstrations. Many old games seemed that they wanted to see the Game Over screen on a daily basis. Just look at Ghouls and Ghosts, a game, that while fun at the beginning, the fact that you can't get past level 1 without whole weeks of practice and a lot of luck, frustrates you.

I don't like how many modern players are so obssesed with this exagreated reality concept that is just all about booms and bangs. All I see nowadays is Halo, Hitman and such, that while not bad, they are not quite as addictive as some older games. You rarely see abstract games (like puzzles and some platfromers) nowadays.

If you ask the, the golden age of gaming was around the 90s, with all the new stuff, like snes with its many wonderful games, psx (now renamed as pso) with its capability of larger games, and long library, arcade with its shorter games and n64 with its great technology, and their console multiplayer experience.

I really should not be speaking, as all i do lately is trying a new way to beat Onslaught In Marvel vs Capcom

Heh, those kids don't know what they're missing.

I still have my old Nintendo and Super Nintendo and a big ol' stack of games for them. The few times I'm home long enough to not have anything to do I still enjoy killing a couple hours playing them. Even have an old '80's model TV that they're hooked up to... I had all kinds of hell trying to get them to work right on a newer TV...

LF - How come you cant get the snes and nes to work right in newer tvs? Its all about plugging them to the universal antenna cable thingy. All TVs from 70-80 to the day of today must have that thing. The snes even has the audio video cables, in case your tv is from a really exotic brand

Ohh Shit I missed "2" ...my bad man..

I am personally big fan of SF: Alpha 3 and SF3: Third Strike

When I was little, my dad would play chess with me on weekends when we had some time, and I was never good enough to beat him... but kept trying anyways.. eventually, he put some stakes on the table.. The deal was, if I ever beat him, he would buy me a computer then. I think it took me 2 years.

I remember vividly the day that I stalemated him, bwaha... "Mom, mom, look I stalemated dad!" ...heh. (That was almost a bigger victory than beating him, eventually.)

So yeah, I'm all for egging little kids on with challenges like beating their parental figure at something, the victory is just one of those things that always stays with you. Best if the game has a lot of factors and interest to it, and not much randomness.

Ruski - I like SF:A 3 a lot too, my only complaint with it is that it became almost an alpha-ized SF2. I have not had the chance to play SF3, but I keep hearing a lot of controversy about it. I'd like to test it personally.

Right now my fav fighting games are KI2, Mark of the Wolves, MvsC, SFA3 and KoF2000.

I like a lot to play with my dad, however, he likes cooperative games better, such like Worms: armageddon (well, because we discuss what should be the best thing to do, and we have found some nifty thingies). We like to play lemmings (snes) a lot, but we have not got really far (level 23 or so on second difficulty).

I played a lot of Cetipede, Asteroids, and Galaxian. But I have to say that none of the games of old could ever hold a candle to modern 1st person shooters.....

My idea of a game is very simple: If it moves, kill it.

Oooohhh...Joust! Man, I just luvvved that game! Flap them wings! Kill that pteranadon! Man, that was hard...getting that lance in its mouth...*whew!

WebS, exercise? My girlie doesn't take well to hard exercise. She would rather have a picnic than play tag. Although, she is the best little ballerina in our area - and I'm not just saying that. She's dainty, petite, far more flexible than the other kids and has poise coming out of her ears. (Girlie #2 on the other hand is a massive tomboy already. She enjoys slapping mud and throwing things down street drains. Given the choice, she would be running around outside 24/7.)

Joust still rocks.
I had Marble Madness on my Amiga and played every day. Had Lemmings on my Amiga as well and we whipped the snot out of that game.
Crystal Palace rocked, but I was never that great at it. One of my buds had blisters from that game.

Starting to have another nostalgia attack, but kids need breakfast.

Hehe...sounds wonderful, WJ! My daughter is an energy bundle...and tends to get bored easily (though I suspect, that sometimes it is an attempt at attention - lol). Keeps me very busy...luckily, I only have one daughter!

ahh those were the days...

I had a revelation a couple of years back:
I always teased my dad by having problems with grasping the concept of a ordinary TAC-II joystick, trying to play TestDrive on the Amiga.
I couldn't understand why handling a 8 way joystick with one button should be so hard.

Well, a few years back I got to play Mortal Combat on a PS. The kid tried to explain all cool Death Moves (blue-blue-up-right-red-blah).
Man, I was frustrated. How the hell were I supposed to coordinate my fingers to fix all that ???

Then I finally understood my dad.

Now where's my hat and cane? I have some pigeons to feed!

I find current videogames to be way too confusing. With large, 3D worlds to explore I find myself getting lost and then losing interest in the game. I look at Final Fantasy XI. It has fantastic graphics and game play but I end up turning off the game because it takes one half of an hour to wander from quest to quest. Mario Sunshine for GameCube is similar. Theres so many different quests I end up getting bored. Games that I do enjoy though are sports games. I think their franchise modes are getting better and better. I love Madden 2004 and College Football 2004. I play then religiously.

I miss Dig Dug, Rampage, Centipede. I used to have a coleco-vision console game with cartridges of Mouse Trap, Cabbage Patch Kids game, Donkey Kong... I loved that old game.

These threads always remind me how my parents got rid of my C64. I've still got all the disks, but nothing to play them on.

What are you all bitching about you moany old gits??? Your parents played with hoops and balls.. and bit's of string.. and broken twigs..or they read books and wrote poetry.. and played word games.. or cowboys.. and fairy princesses.. and you thought they were boring old farts.

Then you got to go to your first arcade.. or if you were lucky you got one of those primitive consoles and screwed your eyes up with ping pong all night. And your parents thought you were rude, unimaginative, uncreative brats wasting you time completely. Have you forgotten already? Does it only take half a single generation to become as dumb as the one that preceded it? I think some are just jelous with the speed that their own children are making them feel redundant. Don't forget it's almost entirely adults.. or your own generation that are creating these games.. hmm

We all sit here tapping our ideas on a keyboard thinking we are cutting edge.. one day people will just project their thoughts into a forum (if will still be called that) by simply stroking some shiny orb.. and they will call us.. I don't even know what they will call us...

I have no problems with the controls. In a game like that, I'll run around like a madman until it's all pure reflex. Having the FLUDD is a very welcome addition to the Super Mario universe. It seriously opens up the game to alternative routes. Don't want to ride the swing ships to that last red coin? Just hover over to the cages and take it from there.

My gripe with Sunshine is the obstacle courses. One little slip and you are doing the whole thing all over again. I didn't mind the first few, but they get insanely hard. What's up with having to bounce off of flying pigs?
