This is a bit of a departure from my normal way of doing things and I'm looking for how this page strikes you all. I was playing around with a few concepts and one of them that intrigued me was how you get a diagonal line on the corners of boxes when using larger border sizes with differing colors. I thought it would be neat to try to pull that diagonal feel into the page with a background graphic that was on a slant while trying to match it with the same slope on the corners of a few divs.

It's all basically xhtml compatible with a few glitches here and there so I'm doing my best to get on this standards bandwagon. I want to get dynamic style sheet switching on this page too and use it to get myself up to speed on that concept.

Any and all comments are more than welcome, thanks very much.

I really like that - it gives the page an original look and a cool atmosphere. Nice balance of colours too. :)

I liked when it first loaded, and then I scrolled down, and the menu moved and the boxes moved and the background stayed stationary. That didn't work for me.

I think this is an excellent proof of concept, but I am not sure it really works when you have a whole lot of content boxes. If you would limit it to say 3 or so it might go fine, but you will just lose your focus when in there. The border detracting from the content is the main problem here.

Interesting idea, but it looks a little off. The header, in particular, is very off--the upper red border extends out too far.

As for the individual quotes, I would lose the one-pixel borders. As it is, it almost looks like a perspective trick, but the opposite borders ruin that (you wouldn't see anything of those borders if it was really jutting out like that). Also, you might want to consider making the angled borders the same width--I think that's another thing that contributes to the off feeling.

I realize that you may not have been aiming for a perspective feel, but most people are immediately (and unconsciously) going to assume that, and the aspects I mentioned above are going to look "wrong."

One more thing. I'm not really into frames, but I really don't like how the menu scrolls. Once it is off of that tiny space you have for it, it is unreadable. That's something you might want to consider.

All in all, though,

The menu scrolling up really bothers me too. I would like it to stay where it is but I wanted that background fixed. I'll think about how best to keep it stationary. My first inclination is to make the center content overflow:auto and just have that scroll but what I hate about that is not being able to customize the scroll bar appearance to blend into the page.

That is precisely why I came here with it. I got myself down a particular path excited by some of what I saw and horrified by the rest. I don't want to lose those interesting bits.

I definitely did NOT want a perspective look and I was hoping the different colors would prevent that. But I think you're right about that is what will be seen. Hmm.... The reason I have the different border sizes is to get the same diagonal slope as is seen in the background image. If I go to equal sizes that will result in a 45 degree angle which will probably clash with the background slant.

Thanks for the feedback, it's just the sort of realignment I was hoping for. I'll work on version 2.0

Just a real quick note - I would definately *not* make the borders the same width - the 45 degree angle would be rather ugly IMO.

It does feel a bit ...off, but quite frankly that's one of the things that makes me like it.

The menu scrolling while the background stays is the only thing that I don't like about it.
