Ok,

My mate is looking to do this really cheaply, he wants to be able to broadcasts live on the internet (local band music from the youth club/uni/bar scene) - I figure this means some client app that streams audio from his XP Home machine up to a server which then handles all the requests and streaming to listeners.

But anybody know how this can be accomplished for the maximum audience on the smallest budget possible (open source and 'free free' apps are best)

Also what sort of server would be required? anybody know of anyone that will sponsor me with some hosting space?

Thanks for your help guys, I have a vague feeling I have posted about this before somewhere... can't see it here though and since I have not found a solution I'm hoping you smarties can help me out.

Jon

http://www.shoutcast.com/

It's not open, but it's free.

It is necessary to stream to it from Winamp. I am sure you can find all of the information on the site.

The SHOUTcast audio homesteading system is comprised of three simple components. They are explained in detail below:

LISTENING

Listeners tune in to SHOUTcast broadcasts by using a player compatible with streaming MP3 audio. Users can visit the SHOUTcast directory to locate a stream they'd like to listen to. Recommended players are listed below:

* Windows users should use Winamp.
* Mac users should use Audion.
* Linux/X Windows users should use XMMS.

BROADCASTING

Persons wanting to broadcast will need to run their own server, as per the instructions below, or find someone willing to run one for them. Once a server's located, broadcasters use Winamp and a plug-in called the SHOUTcast Source for Winamp Plug-In to send audio from Winamp to the SHOUTcast server. The tools are available here, and there's an entire section of the documentation dedicated to the plug-in.

RUNNING A SERVER

The magic of the SHOUTcast system happens inside the SHOUTcast Distributed Network Audio Server (DNAS). This software runs on a server attached to an IP network with lots of bandwidth, and is responsible for receiving audio from a broadcaster, updating the SHOUTcast directory with information about what the broadcaster is sending, and sending the broadcast out to listeners. More information is in the server section of the documentation.

So - where do I get someone to run the server for me? any ideas guys?

Well, I don't know. Most web servers (even the ones who give you telnet access) won't let you run constant services. I have typically run the server myself, but at only 30kb/s upload, it doesn't support many users. I guess you just have to look around.

You may have a tough time finding someone willing to give you both bandwidth and serverspace for free, not to mention the fact that most Server Admins like to get paid....mostly because they like to eat and keep a roof over their heads.

So what I suggest is to use your own machine as a server. And here is the software you need:
Darwin Streaming Server

Binaries are available for Linux, Mac, Solaris, and even Windows.

I set this up a few years ago on an older iMac connected to cable. Not to difficult......
