Topic awaiting preservation: Hellboy :: painter - doodle - progress show off - fanart - failure

well this has nothing to do with photoshop....
but basicly I wanted to see what I could do...I have little expirience with painter and shitty tablet.

went to a bookstore some day, grabbed the art of hellboy and flippend around to get an idea and feel of character...I kinda like the him, he is interesting...big, red, beaf ball...

anyway did a quick 5 mins sketch outa my head, trying to fit him into my style....



its horrible, inaccurate etc etc...but who cares...

scanned the image, lowered brush opacity to 60% and added few quick colors...



keep doodling and building up mass...always thinking about values...



here we add some value to a hand....



eh...it's getting worse....



and I felt too lazy to give it some effort at the end...




over all it was fun study...I didnt use any reference and didnt plan anything...just allowed my hand to do whatever it felt like doing...I know there is no source of light, no background...and cloth looks terrible...but I kinda happy the way it looks...

P.S. I am not gonna work on it anymore =)

But what i would like to know is..............Why do you have a firefox tab in your taskbar with a window called VAGINA....

It is a nice pic, though his tail's a little weird right below the tip, and he looks like he's taking a dump.

I didn't notice it nor I remeber much..but as far as I am concerned its wa not a porn site.(don't get me wrong I have seen plenty of porn, and have no shame in it)

That probably was a website of this girl I found on livejournal. I remmeber she had a title "vagina something"...she is already at this college I am headed for.

Apart from the deal with the vagina, I kind of liked your sketch. The final painting kind of dissapointed me. While you did a good work saying goodbye to lineart, the color pics seemed to me a bit poor, and the shading a bit loosehand.

don't get me wrong, the work isnt bad, but for what I have seen of your stuff at devart, you got some much better stuff.

On the sketch: It looks nice, but: the "loose" feels comes off more as: "sloppy." I think that being a bit more conservative with the amount of lines you place would help. All the anatomy looks pretty good, except for the arm. I can't pinpoint it, but it just doesn't look right.

On the painting: The anatomy problems have carried over, but the colors kill it a bit. As the painting progresses, hellboy gets let and less...red, and the colors become muddy. Also: it's not finished. It looks very unpolished. Also his stone-arm...isn't very ston-ey, nor does it have the inscriptions on it. I think it would also have been more interesting if the lighting had been more dramatic.

I'd like to see some more effort put into the painting: finish it!

It's the elbow. I'm sure this painting is done so at this point it wouldn't matter but in the future you should take care to place the elbow a little higher up. I've never seen another picture of Hellboy, but it looks as though if you were to straighten his arm, his elbow would fall slightly above his wrist. Of course, it also looks like if you were to stand him up and lay his arms at his sides, his arms would fall slightly below his knees. Again, I haven't seen an actual Hellboy comic, so maybe he has gorilla arms.

You could have also shaded better under his left eye.

Other then that it looks good.

Ruski.... THANK YOU! Your example just helped me figure out a problem that I have been having with a piece that I had started doing just straight from a sketch and I did not know where to start! Thank you this helped alot! This is the sketch that I have been dinking around with for the last 2 weeks. Again, thanks.

Two weeks?

The most I spend on a drawing is about an hour and then I throw it away cause it looks like someone took a shit on paper, ate the shit and paper, shit that out, mixed that shit with corn-filled dog crap ate that then shit it out and put it on a second piece of paper.

tntcheats: This piece took me 4 days of straight work just to get the skin tone right. When I work on a piece, I experiment constantly. If I do not like the way a work is going, I change up what I am doing and try something else with the piece. I keep on working it over and over untill I get it to the way I want it. Working on artwork like this take time, practice and patience. I just like producing quality coloring work.

I should mention that I did not draw it, I am just coloring over it. I do have permission from the original artist to color it though.
