Topic awaiting preservation: Downloading Music Legally, What Software Do You Use?

I haven't downloaded music for ages, so when my sister told me she had found my nephew and niece trying to use KaZaA for music dl's, I confirmed her suspicions that this was still illegal as far as I knew. As a result, she removed KaZaA from the computer.
I am not too sure but judging by the looks I now get from nephew and niece, I may not be their favorite uncle anymore. This has to be remedied ASAP, so......
What are the best free/cheap ways to download music nowadays? I am googling for answers as well, but I thought my Asylumite buddies would have much better suggestions than the dubious ones I have received so far (Napster being one).
This would be primarily for the kids to use so they would not want to be running to Mom for a credit card number, every time they want to dl a tune.
If I found a good legal program that they could use, I'm sure I would be reinstated as favorite uncle numero uno, which is where I belong

I'm not sure if you're looking for something that has to be paid for or not. iTunes is an option, $1 per song. It's a good music program too.

DC++ is a great choice ( google it). Although not "legal" in the sense u'd like it to be - its free, and AFAIK untracable in the way kazaa is.
I think the major problem with kazaa is not that you're "borrowing" copyrighted songs, but rather that you run a high chance of getting busted (I believe all those people getting sued used kazaa).

So if you want something that is virtually safe - try DC++ - if u wanna be an Honest Uncle who disapproves of piracy of any kind - either get your kids hooked on non-copyrighted songs of bands who are still trying to promote themselves, or give them your credit card: )

I thought it was illegal to share the music, not to download. Anyway I use Apollon that connects to the OpenFT and FastTrack networks on my Linux box. On windows you can download a client called KCeasy that can connect to the same networks.

It's not really a program, per se, but there's a great remixing community at www.ocremix.org that has a ton of cool remixed game music for your free listening pleasure. Be sure, however, to use the bittorrent download option if you plan on getting a lot of the songs, it helps out the guy who runs it (1000's of downloads = large bandwidth fees, duh.)

I believe they have about 1000+ songs available to download via bittorrent.

If your kids are into games it's a good recommendation.

as far as legal downloading goes, iTunes or Napster is going to be what you're looking for. iTunes, IMHO, is going to be the better of the two.

Well, there is the usenet binary groups, not exactly legal, but then again, not attracting much attention these days either. Usually you have to purchase the service for a monthly fee. If interested, do a google for 'Forte newsgroup service.'

I have gone the legal route and check out a lot of stuff at the Live Music Archive. Not really for kids though, unless they are into the Grateful Dead and stuff like that.

I don't really purchase any new artist music nowadays, not into it, so I have yet to check out any of the pay-per-song services.

I was a little confused when reading what Napster has turned into. The monthly subscription to download as much music as you'd like is pretty straight forward, and may be your best bet Tao. What confuses me is the 99¢ fee for burning music. I guess with the subscription you have access to listen to it but you don't actually own the songs. This doesn't seem like such a bad offer.

I've never really downloaded music from places like Napster or Kaza so when iTunes came out w/ their store I started using that immediately. I don't listen to a whole lot of music so 99¢ per song for 50 or so songs isn't obscene. It's fantastic quality and very easy to use. You pay by credit card but the # is stored so you don't need to enter it every time you download something. The downside is that you have to purchase each song.

You might be best off suprising your neice & nephew with a subscription to Napster for $9.95, allowing them to listen to all the music they want and restoring your status of favorite uncle.

Not a problem in Canada, not yet.

has anyone checked out AllofMP3? It doesn't have all the songs in the world but download speeds are great and you only have to pay .01 cent per MB. So a good 128 bit song only cost .04 cents. And you get to choose which format you want. .wav, .mp2, .wmv and I think there's a few more.
It uses your credit card or paypal for funds. You pay an initial amount and then it pulls from it like a bank account. I'm very satisfied so far.

Thanks I'm checking them out now, there sure are a lot to choose from out there. It seems they want to be able to save to disk and be able to play on an MP3 player. Basically we're looking for as much freedom from mum and dad's (and uncle's) having to pay for each download, so a monthy or annual fee would suit.

There is actually a legal version of Kazaa you can download from the site, but you have to pay for it. Not sure how much though. I never used it so I don't know if it's good or not (I've only ever used the illegal version).

Kazaa itself is not illegal.

What is illegal is the sharing (which means uploading or downloading) of copyrighted material - be it music, games, movies, or whatever. And it's illegal *pretty much* anywhere.
