How does a small design studio like my own get into the annual reports business when we don't have a portfolio of annual reports design?

Well, I can think of at least one company that would (almost definately) hire you to do their annual report.
I have to believe once you do a good job on one, the second one will be a little easier...then a third just a little bit easier, and so on.

What do you mean?

More than likely, it is not mandantory for you to create an annual report, but that doesn't mean you can't. Simply include all the financials, sales information, message from the CEO/GM/big cheese/whatever, mission from the board, etc that would be included in any other annual report.
Add lots of pretty graphs and charts, a stunning picture of your fearless leader, glossy paper and all.

Publish it. Send it out to all your clients, your local chamber of commerce, etc.

Now, you have an (one!) annual report for portfolio. One is better than none, yes?

Ah, yea, I've thought of that. Thanks for reminding me.

After you have finished you own. change the company name and the numbers and even the colors and voila here you have an number two. You could put "Demo Model" on the first page to be save. Be creative and in know time you have an portfolio. Also make some flyers (Full color A6 / 5" are very reasonable priced when printed...) And put them with al you pruducts you send to clients. Call them prouct information update and put some info about your annual report products on them.
