I like how this is put forward and really like the older posters (circus etc.) and now I apparently know why.... at least from a 'colour' perspective. =)

Nice link, NoJive. The site has a good historical perspective as well as having an interesting discussion of the psychology of the use of color in posters.

I would be interested in seeing other sites that have a more in depth discussion of the psychology of color use.

Have you heard of the Luscher colour test? Not much in depth discussion here, but it is interesting and you can always google a little deeper for discussion.
As for the results of the test for me? Well I don't think it matched my personality at all. I guess for an online test, the results can be "tainted" by monitor quality and calibration.

Tao: Yes I first ran across around 1978. It's an interesting test although I have never seen an good description of why it works. Both the people who administer it and the people who take it feel that it is a very accurate test. Of course, the results of the test will change as your life changes. The link you gave is one of the better implementations I've seen.

That isn't really what I was talking about when I said I was interested in the psychology of color. I'm more interested in understanding why people react certain ways to certain colors so that I can use the knowledge of how the "average" person will react when selecting colors for an image or a web site.

Of course, our reactions to color are very influenced by culture (environment) and so different people will have different reactions to the same color. I found the brief discussion on the site referenced by NoJive of how the advertising industry uses color to attract people's attention interesting, because that is more along the lines I'm interested in.
