comments always welcome. won't likely be changing this one, but a 2nd version should be forthcoming. Consider this a rehearsal sig...

I like the extended knotted pattern DL, it's a bit like a bookmarker I have, especially with the ribbon effect at the end. I know the colours are not exactly primary, but I still find them a little too bright for my personal taste.
Having said that it is still a lovely sig. You've got me wondering now what the second version will be like.

I loved the colors! tao they fit in really well here, really well. The only thing that gave me pause was the fact that it looks layer efffecty on the knot and jagged on the ribbon, just the red 1px edge bits. But I know you have this thing against layer effects and jagginess so I'm left wondering if something wasn't lost in a downsize or somesuch.

darn nice tho, takes me back in Asylum history too, remembering conversations gone by.

I am sorry, but I find it looks a little too un-natural - if you look at the real thing you notice that the weave makes the whole appear more 3-D (and wavey) as well as the edges not being as straight as the ones in your sig...

The idea is cool, and I even like the look of it, but there is this nagging feeling that there is something wrong with the picture in the back of my mind (if you know what I mean)

The colors are a bit different from what I would normally use, but in this case I liked them, and they fit the subject matter.

Some things on the knotwork itself were certainly lost on resize, and I didn't manage to account for them all.

The 'layer effects' feel you mention is irking me too....getting a good balance on the highlights/shadows was starting to annoy me, so I left it as it stood.

As far as the "real thing" goes.....well, it depends on what you want to call the "real" thing. The styles used in many of the classic examples vary greatly. Most of them give very little, if any, hint of '3D'. Of course, the edges seem a bit on straight side because the knotwork is rather tight, and the size small. Perhaps at such a small size, I need to loosen them up a bit...

my goal with the latest -

1) more complex knot.

2) less 'layer style' looking highlights.

3) slightly less primary colors, without abandoning the colors altogether.

I think I like the last attempt the best....

Nice.

I like the last one best, too. Almost looks like it could be in the book of Kells. Are you familiar with the book "Celtic Art - The Methods of Construction" by George Bain? It is an excellent reference for this type of work.

The third one is very nice. The only thing that bothers me about it is the lettering. The dots around it look make them look.. off.. is the only way I can describe it. Caveat - I'm on my laptop at work, and even with an external monitor, my colors don't show perfectly, so it's possible it's just me.

Where did you get the knotwork from, or did you create it yourself using a program?

Damn you, DL. I was brushing up on my knot work just the other day and planning a new sig. You beat me to the punch.

Excellant work you've done.

Rhyssa, I'm pretty sure DL did it all by hand without software outside of Photoshop.
There are several tutorials out there and not so bad once you get the hang of it.

The method I've been using lately can be found here - http://users.erols.com/mihaloew/celtic/cel_class.shtml

I use a grid much like his, and have it set as a pattern so I just fill the page with the grid before starting. I've also printed a few pages out to practice by hand. *very* helpful, best method I've seen so far.

Moth - No, I'm not familiar with that (or anyother..) books on the subject, but I beleive his name is mentioned, and his techmiques may even be used, in the tutorial I posted above.

The particular knot in my sig is based on one that is used quite frequently in the Linisfarne Gospels, a work similar to the Book of Kells in content and quality (though I'm certainly no expert on either work...), and is "hand made" in photoshop.

As for the dots - the space seemed very empty without them, and the red-dots-as-borders concept is very common in such works, so I thought I'd use it. It was still empty so I added the faint orange spirals as well. Makes it busy and perhaps even "off" as mentioned, but without it it doesn't feel right.

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys.

I think I'll keep this one a while...

Ah, I see the faint spirals in teh back now. I told you my laptop colors are slightly off. *sigh*

Looks even better on te good computer at home, and I'll have to look into those tutorials. I love Celtic knotwork, and it goes well with the online name I've chosen. although "Rhyssa" is technically Welsh if one is being.. technical.

Yes, the last one looks the best...

about your comment with the straight line being there because the knotwork is tight -
in a real model tight knowts would cause the fabric to curl... that was what I meant in the first place -
the real thing is never flat, it is kinda wavy...

I really like this new version DL- and as "The monk of Funk" JKM says' I too remember some good threads way back in the day covering this, I think I made this for the GN but never posted it.
