I've been using phpDEV for the past year or so and until now not a single problem, but just recently the Apache server with it just died out??
No probs I thought and installed Apache seperately and nothing it just won't start! I try to start it and it gives me this error:
<OS 2> The system cannot find the file specified. :No installed service named "Apache2"
Strange huh. I think it might have something to do with a weird error I've been getting the past few days:
Network Security Guard Error, dilre93ky4jk.exe error
Anyone know what gives? And if this things serious can anyone tell me what's the next best thing to Apache??

there is no 'next best thing to apache{2}'...
but that dilre something file does sound like some kind of malware... I suggest you give your system a good combing with those anti spyware tools and virus scanners found in the faq.
so long,

iis isn't all bad - but it's a lot more opaque to administratethan apache , it costs money, comes only with the server versions of windows (pricey) and has a history of having trouble with php (at least the machine we had at work kept creating 99% php-zombies about once a week - blame whomever you like), and of course, will just not act in the same way that your webhost (who probably is running apache) will.
The fact that it 'suddenly stopped' running, combined with probably a botched installation is something you created... especially if you (inadvertly) tried to have multiple apaches on the same machine without precaution, it 'just won't work'...

*sad* Problem
I think this thing is more than spyware. I downloaded SpyBot scanned and turned on filters plus got rid of the warez that had come up but this thing is still there. I guess I'll just have to settle with some cheap alternative, anyone got any suggestions?
*sad*
Someone told me I should install Linux along with windows... will that solve it? I've got Linux and a Lindows OS should I consider duel boot??
Also I was wondering if anyone knew of a software compatibility chart for Linux, just want to check that if I do install it will it be any use to me.

Well I know plenty of people run Apache on Linux.
But I am very confused.
All of a sudden there's an unexplained problem, most likely not caused directly by your OS or by Apache, and you are giving up and looking for a new server?
Wouldn't you be better served by trying to find out what the problem actually is, and fixing it??

It something deep, I've tried bloody microsoft's support but they haven't a clue, I'll see if it's got anything to do with apache.
I just hope it doesn't end up with a formatting *gulp*
--------Edit--------
Nope it's not Apache, its not Spyware.... What the Hell is this thing!! I feel like the guys in Aliens when they first saw the creature!!
uh oh... I just remembered... me and my bro's PC is on a Network, his system was infected with the worm... AAAAAAAAHHHH!!!! But I patched the darn OS!! Aw man!!!

Ah....the joys of Windows. Relief is spelled L - I - N - U -X . Grab a copy of partition magic and make a linux partition, then install Fedora (redhat) or Suse. Both are easy installs for those new to linux.

Another web server that works very well is xitami. I have used it for about five years and like it very much.
However, I must agree with DL-44: "All of a sudden there's an unexplained problem, most likely not caused directly by your OS or by Apache, and you are giving up and looking for a new server?"
It seems to me you should try to find out what is causing the problem (like a worm) and fix that.

Uh oh... even Xitami's freakin' up!
I got rid of Apache... well I think I have. I installed Xitami and it's giving this wierd error when I start it:
"Could not open port 80 - Port is already used by another server (WSAEADDRINUSE)"
I think Apache's still lurking behind somewhere in my PC!!
Say norm can you give me some more info on Linux I'm seriously starting to consider it. If I do install it, which one? I went to the site and there were like 10 different versions. I think I'm only going to be using it for web development I've got windows for entertainment and graphics plus I don't think most of my graphics softwares Linux compatible.
I really need some help man

Take a look at SUSE, it is easy to install and Novell provides lots of documentation
There are lots of good sites for Linux newbies like linux.ie
Time spent learning Linux is very worthwhile, it will teach you a lot about what is actually going on under the hood for all operating systems.... Feel free to email me with any specific Linux questions at norm1220(at)gmail.com

If your port 80 is still in use you have a bigger problem. Installing and running Linux is NOT I repeate NOT easy. If you are unable to figure out the problem with running Apache on windows you will not be able to get it to run on Linux. Linux is about 1000 time more difficult than windows. It is also about 1000 times more stable.
But with what you are talking about changing your OS is the last thing you will want to do. When running linux, you will have similar problems but you will not get a nice error message telling you what needs to be fixed. You will just see that the Apache process is not running or that you can not access your web server. You will then have to crawl though pages of error logs to figure out what the actual problem is.
I tell you this because I run a web server using an open source OS and setting it up and making it all run smoothly was something that I had to do a ton of research on and use a lot of experience that I gained using open source Unix like OS's over many years.
So it all comes down to the fact if you can't fix a problem on the easy OS you are not going to be able to get things running smoothly on the expert OS.
