had this pc for over a year now without problems but as of late its developed certain glitches that couldnt be ignored or fixed such as the inability to install anymore applications in spite of 30gigs of unused space.

managed to format and re-install xp in under an hour and then spent 3 hours trying to get my email working again and a further 7 hours trying to resolve the lack of sound presented to me after the re-install. it seems this is a common problem and the solution is not easy to find so take note and back up your drivers before formatting.....

all is well now though apart from reinstalling all my software

Wow, 11 hours! My record is 7, getting all the software reloaded, security patches, service packs, etc...

I'm curious to know how ghosting his problematic system would have eliminated the problems.

I usually got my system back in under 3h with outlook profiles, photoshop settings and so on. Make ghost files always you set up a NEW installation of windows without anymore programs installed. Go step by step with directX, servicepacks and security patches. If something wrong you always got the basic ghost file and can start again :-]

If you finished make another ghost and you're happy

Whatever you do, at least back up your modem drivers. Without internet, you'll have to get your drivers from old and/or forgotten CD's you thought you'd never need again.. who turn out to be missing, scratched, broken, fed to the cat....

who said anything about elimination?????
i thought it was obvious.
now that he has spent hours and hours reinstalling and tweaking he can spend another 4 minutes to ghost (or image) and he can restore his system at any time in another 4 minutes.
i reghost my system once a year minimum or when it get corrupt...then i reinstall directx, drivers, whatever is current.

Calm down. Then forgive me for not understanding what you thought was obvious.

I think I can beat 7 hours to a useably tweaked up-to-date XP build with Office - have often re-built several PCs in one go to create fresh images from them.

My own PC, on the other hand, I'm never actually finished with. It has been going fine for the past three or four years, but has never stayed in the same state for any length of time. I keep putting off the backups tiill I get it just right...

I just know it's gonna go bad on me before I get around to it.

Yes, if you've just gone through a long nad difficult reinstall, taking the extra time to make a backup image is a damn good idea.
