Not sure if anyone has brought this up already or not (at least I don't think I saw it in the recent topics here), but any chance we can get a link to the pages of a thread next to the thread title? Rather than having to click the thread, then click the last page to see anything new.
That's just one more page you have to click to get to new content, and when you're on a 21kbps connection, every page counts.

why don't you simply click on the timestamp in the "Latest Post" column ? It points directly to the last post of a thread, even if you display the thread pagewise.

Wooow... I knew there was something I'd missed. I guess it's time I call it a day and find a bed to crawl into.

Perhaps because that isn't terribly intuitive?

This has to be the 10th time I've seen this question asked.

The current system also assumes you want to jump directly to the last post, which isn?t always the case for example:

Say we have a topic that generates a huge amount of discussion. When I first post, it?s already up to page 3. When I return the next day it?s up to 5 pages. To get back to page 3 from the main topic listing so I can pick up where I left off I have to enter the thread, wait for the whole page to load, scroll right down the bottom and then finally click on the page number I'm after.

The navigation links at the bottom of the pages work well if you?re reading it start to finish, but seeing as most discussions span several days if not weeks you?re hardly ever likely to read from beginning to end in one solid sitting.

The whirlpool forums implement multi-page discussions quite well:

I also like the separate headers and footers devoted to navigating the multi-page threads. It just makes it easier to move around.

Actually, the entire forum system over there is extremely well thought out - lots of tiny details that make using it a pure pleasure. If the grail designers have some time, I'd suggest playing with that and stealing some of the ideas born out of it. Like the grail, it's a custom forum that's developed over quite a few years and it has a huge user base (currently ranked 80th in the world?s largest forums). Yet despite its size and massive user base, it is by far the most "usable" form I've ever played with.

Thanks for clarifying that a bit Cameron. I wanted to say something like that last night, but it would have been an incoherent mess and I didn't want to waste anyones time with it.

Either way, I second that idea.
