Topic awaiting preservation: Boolean in Illustrator?

Hi all, i am doing some CD printing and artwork in illustrator. I have an orange CD with white text. When they make the cd they print the whole thing white, then do the orange. So they say i need to cut my text out of the orange part.

I cant seem to find away to do this, i have converted my text to outlines etc, and have path for the orange bit. I see no boolean operations anywhere which is what im used too. Is there an equivalent in illustrator? Thanks..

Bleh, i should post more often when i have a question as i normally find the answer 2 seconds later..

The problem was it isnt in the menu, you have to goto window -> pathfinder and do it from the tools that popup.


Just out of interest tho, what is the compound path used for?

Yep the pathfinder is your friend.

I am asuming the CD is going to be silkscreened?

You shouldn't actually have to boolean out the text. If you simply printed the seperation the white type should should automaticly knock out of the (Orange Film if spot color, or from the yellow and magenta films using 4/c.) I would suppect you don't need to specify the white objects for the background of the cd as I suppect the printer would likely have this pre-done.

Yeh i tried to ask them that, but this seemed the way they preferred it. Its my first spot job so i dont know how they do it exactly their end.

Now that I think about it, they must be using some kind of mask cutter, that would explain the reason for you to boolean out the white text.

Yeh its no biggey, easy to do. I just could never find bloody boolean commands in the menu's... beacause they arent there. Hidden away in another window T.T

woah. I could never find it either, and it's caused me a lot of headaches and unnecessary work in the past. My week just got even better. thanks
