Hey...I need help! I've got an HP pavillion and for the past 3 weeks after I installed Adobe CS, everytime I try do any stretching or use any big files in photoshop, my computer just QUITS! Bombs - and I have over 1 GB RAM! what's going on? No other program does this. Is it an HP thing? A CS thing? An XP thing? HELP OUT THERE!

As to your question, have you checked to make certain that your Pavilion has all of the other specs CS requires? You may have gobs of RAM, but if your processor isn't big enough, that could be causing the hang up...

Beyond that, someone who's been using CS probably needs to step in here... I'm still getting used to 7.0!

You might come back with such specifics as what else is running on the system while you're using PS, and what you've already tried doing to fix it...

There used to be a thread around here where I had some troubles with CS that were chronicled then solved but I can't for the life of me find it.

Howevver, I do remember that following these instructions explicitly was the answer. I actually went out and bought a second 120GB hardrive for scratch disk, I tihnk that was the biggest factor (seperate physical drive).

Well I have been running CS on winXP pro, for nearly half a year now, and have upgraded my system twice, I am currently running on a 1gig of ram now so that shouldn't be an issue.

Photoshop does as others have indicated, needs lots of scratch disk space, I keep one 40 gig, serial ATA drive that I use solely for photoshop scratch disk. I find I much perfer to allocate less physical memory an relay more on the scratch disk. As is generaly run the whole creative suite pro, and several other applictions in the background.

Be sure to check your memory alotment. I would set it around 70% or lower. You need to allow enough for background tasks and other applications.

Also did you happen to install Adobe Cue, check it's memory usage. I think it defaults to 128meg it casued me a few issues before I upgraded my system. You might consider just turning it off, you don't need it's functionallity.

Make sure you have the latest DirectX, and up to date drivers for you video card.

Other then that it's likely to be a software conflect, Preassembled systems come with a lot of extra crap on them. Check the firewall, virus checker, and other appliction running in the background. Try killing of some tasks or shutting down a few background apps and see if CS funtions properly.

Other then the help system,I haven't run into any other issues with Service Patch 2.

I'd also think this is a hard disk space problem. Photoshop won't run if your hard disk is full and having loads of RAM usually only speeds up heavy processes in PS rather than allow or disallow a process to run.

If you have 1gb RAM I'd suggest you free up at least that amount in HD space for Photoshop and remember windows will occasionally hog a crap load of space for virtual mem(but unlikely with your GB or RAM). Maybe check those settings, I can't tell you where to find these in XP, I refuse to upgrade/downgrade from win2kpro. I have my reasons.

Years ago when installing an old old old version of linux, it needed a seperate partition for is SWAP file (VirtualMemory). It recomended that the space allocated to be exactly double the amount of RAM in the Pc. Which is understandable.

What I gots is a 4gb 10,000rpm SCSI drive and card dedicated solely for PS, which is overkill because the rest of the computer is fairly pants. :P

Also, in this day and age another major possibility is you have a load of spyware running in the background sitting in your RAM. Heres a great program to see how much RAM you have free: RAMBOOSTER
Its a tiny program which doesnt stay resident unless you want it too, its good to run before playing mpegs.

If you think it is spyware theres software called Spybot search & destroy which works very well. Google.com will sort you out with a copy.
Spyware isnt detected by Anti virus software like Nortan AV. (For legal reasons I'd imagine).

P.S: Your PC doesn't know or care what brand it is. Telling us you have a HP pavillion is pretty useless, unless an inmate is willing to look up the specs, and even then the model number is missing. I dont mean to give out to you , its just a pet peeve I have.
For example when someone is asking me a tech prob about their computer , I get this:
"But Half-Life should run on my pc.. its a DELL !!!" . Its somewhat frustrating.

When describing your computer just say (X)ghz (X)gb ram etc...
