Topic awaiting preservation: Domain pricing? (Page 1 of 1)

I've got a domain name that's easy to remember, fits the planned business perfectly and the backend site is actually almost ready to set up.

Just one snag, the domain is taken and for sale...
There's no site, it's just booked with the intention to sell it.
All the info I can get to is "Place a bid".

I won't say what the domain name is, but it is a natural combination of 2 common words which happens to both fit a market that actually generates $$$ online.

Where does pricing for things like this start?
I've seen numbers of $1 - $10k for 6 letter domains, this is 15 letters but easy to spell and remember.

All & any info is valued.

"booked with the intention to sell it" - by someone or somecompany that's in that business? If that's the case I'd have no idea.

I've done 2 inquiries for personally held domains that were inactive, one I got no dice, they obviously thought they could get more than I was willing to pay for it.

The second took over a year to get for $300 (2 words, 10 letters, company name, not an online generator but the 2 words were alliterative had a great ring, easy spell, easy remember). We had the one-two.com name already and were already using it in materials so getting the onetwo.com was just a matter of housekeeping really. In that situation we were able to make an offer and wait them out. A little over a year and maybe 5 emails to start and 5 at the end to close the deal.

Probably not extremely applicable to your situation except to say that picking what you can afford, and sticking to it, sometimes gets you what you're after. If it doesn't, maybe there's an alternate name available. You're never desperate

Unfortunately the owner is selling through a company that charges to sell/buy domains for others, I checked around and they charge 10% or a minimum of $100 to sell a domain so I'm guessing under $1k is unlikely...

So... I went shopping...
I just bought a .com which is quite close to the one I wanted, I guess that'll have to do.

I'm still interested in more info on this though

I really don't have any idea what the market's like these days, it used to be crazy but now? I'd think with the laws and all, it'd mostly be illegal to squat and sell. Go figguh.

When I wanted a domain for me, I wanted the "viol" domain. By then, viol.net and viol.com were taken. I took viol.org that was free (this was in 98). I always kept my eye on the .net and .com versions. In 2000, I noticed that viol.net was released by the italian guy that had it, so, I took it right away, no problem, no high cost. I got rid of viol.org. In 2001 or 2002, I don't remember exactly the date, I noticed that the domain viol.com was not renewed. But it takes a while until the domain is actually ready to be taken again by the first one that comes. Then, making some research, I found a site that claimed to take a domain as soon as it is released (usually more than one month after not being renewed). So, I had no chance against it to took the viol.com domain for me. That site had a fixed price for the service of watching the domain to become available and only one person could pay for this service, and someone had already paid for it, so, I got desperate.

Then, what I did was to send a message to the owner of the domain, saying that I noticed that he hadn't renewed it, and that I was very interested in it. After some days, of a desperate waiting, he replied me that he could sell the domain to me and that I should make an offer for it. I offered US$ 200. He replied saying that the price was US$ 800. I told him that I was very pleased with him for taking the time to talk to me but that, despite my real interest in the domain, I couldn't pay that much and that unfortunately my final price was US$ 200. I told him that I didn't have more money.

Well, he then replied to me: okay, I will sell it to you for $200, and then I became the happy owner of my so much wanted viol.com domain. Until today I have viol.net as well. Only four letters, my surname, fortunately it means a word that is not very important, that's the instrument viol (or bad stuff in French...), so I was able to buy it for $200.

And we lived happily ever after...

well, since this is the perfect name for a very profitable business and it does have the ability to be obtained, why not make an offer of how much you have to spend on it and see if you win. Doesn't hurt to try if you have the money set aside to buy it, go ahead and offer the money.

It sounds like it is owned by a reseller. These guy are kind of funny really. They work for free until they sell it for a good profit more than what they paid for it. Kind of like your own business but damn...that scary to think of how it quickly that could go bad $$$ wise.
