Hey all. here be my thing. Im trying to put together something for digital editing. I've got my computer and camera and footage and junk and stuff, but now im on a budget. my question to you lovely inmates is this. IS adobe premeire worth the money? i really want it simply because its adobe, and they are all that is good. but ive never actually used it. It runs for something like 300 or 400 american greenbacks. Am I going to have a wonderful time? or should i just go sit in the corner with my demo version of pinnacle 8?

Adobe Premiere is fantastic in my opinion. Im quite biased towards it but it's barely played up for me and does a nice job of what it's supposed to do. Pinnacle is shithouse I think...it's done nothing but bad shit for me and Premiere is becoming close to being right up there with Final Cut Pro and the like as it has taken leaps and jumps over the years of it's evolution from a simple domestic edit-your-wedding-on-it program. But make no mistake, it is simple to use and quite user-friendly. Well worth the bucks in my opinion.

well, i'm on a mac so i'm rather biased towards final cut express/pro (running express at the moment) but i'm guessing you're on a pc. i haven't used premiere pro (the newest version) but it sounds like its a step up from older versions (which i have used and wasn't so hot on). the other program i've heard fantastic things about is vegas by sonic foundry (which is now owned by a division of sony, website here). i have a few friends who do pro videography work and they swear by the software. you could also check out avid's free dv software, and they've got avid xpress dv for 495.

not sure where you're getting your pricing btw, i'm seeing premiere pro for 699 on the adobe site.

thanks guys. yes, pinnacle is quite shithouse... i know the adobe production bundle thing is like $1500. but it comes with pemiere and after effects and encore and a few other programs. but i certainly cant afford that right now. Is premiere still worthy even without all its satelite programs? or should I try and find an all in one? (raw footage - complete DVD would be super)
Yeah, a freind was telling me about vegas, but i kinda dismissed it when i found out it was sonic foundry. but what, did sony buy sonic then? avid looks cool, though a little more basic than i was hoping. however, free be free.
theres a place here that has adobe software for way cheaper than their website. I could probably buy the bundled programs indvidually for about a grand. but again, thats hella spendy.

apparently, i found it when i was looking something up on the sonic foundry site a few months ago. but what's wrong with sonic foundry?

for editing, sure. that's all premiere does tho, for motion graphics you'd want after effects (or motion on a mac) and for authoring dvd's you'd want any one of a variety of packages (dvd studio pro for the mac, adobe encore dvd on the pc). hate to say but its too bad you'd don't have a mac...fce for 299, motion for 299, iDVD built in.

I've just had a terrible time with some low end sonic foundry stuff. mabye they're fine up the ladder but i still get a bad taste in my mouth when i hear it.
yeah macs are cool. i used to do alot on a mac back in photoshop 4 days. and mabye ill go back someday. but for now, I'll help Mr. Gates out of the poor house.
after spending some time on the vegas website. im impressed. but 800 dollars... man, there is no way im getting out of this with change in my pocket, am i? so its down to adobe vs vegas. $1000 vs $800... well, thanks anyway guys.... time to start up the lemonade stands...
