Now, I know that Firefox's chrome runs from a customised version of CSS, and having looked through the .css files for a few different themes I've found it, well, no inexplicable, but I really couldn't fathom what all of that did, especially since there were some element selector types I've never dealt with before. Does anyone aorund here have links to any resources explaining just hwat the hell is in there or what to look for to change the look-n-feel of different elements of the interface?

I'm not familiar with that, but I think the answers are in XUL planet. The interfaces in Gecko based browsers uses XUL so it can't be a bad ressource. Hope that helps.

Well, moz use RDF, XBL, XUL, JavaScript and CSS for the interface, not only CSS.

However, if you want to find a resource on what custom and standard CSS properties Gecko handles, have a look at http://unstable.elemental.com/mozilla/build/latest/mozilla/dom/dox/interfacensIDOMNSCSS2Properties.html and http://unstable.elemental.com/mozilla/build/latest/mozilla/dom/dox/interfacensIDOMCSS2Properties.html.

As for their meaing and use, XUL Planet has some documentation at http://www.xulplanet.com/references/elemref/ref_StyleProperties.html though it is not exhausting.
