Hello playmates
Just a quick question. Is there a way I can check to see who or what is linking to an image on my webspace? I think I remember seeing a nifty piece of kit a long while ago that required you to enter the URL of your image, and it gave back all the URL's that are linked to it.

You could try using Google?

That's a server-side issue. If you are running your own server, look up this stuff for Apache (or whatever software you use -- my software writes a log, which I can then grep for the path of the image). If it is hosted by someone else, perhaps you can ask them to get you the information you seek?

check+links+to+images dmoz
I think this is the best I could get from Google, unless I am phrasing the search incorrectly (I did googlize before I posted Emps [i]honest[i])
1 x 1 dastardly indeed
Iron Wallaby, thanks but I'm not running my own server. I do get quite a few "usage logs" from my ISP though that's where I first noticed one image in particular (the smoking bear) had about ten times as many hits as I suspected.
This is not a problem atm (where's that silver lining I had?) but as I have a traffic limit it could potentially be a problem, and I'd like to see if I could minimise such things if possible.
Most of the checkers I have found so far are for broken links, I have downloaded a couple but they don't do the kind of checking that I was looking for.
Ah well, there y'are. Thanks for the help

how about googling for the url of your image, and then choosing 'pages that link to this url'? I believe that's what Emps had in mind.

change the image to goatce (and update your site with the proper image you actually want to use).

Problem solved!

tao, try doing this:

http://www.google.com/search?as_lq= put your image url after the "="

this is the links search that emps and TP were talking about, just thought it'd be easier if you had a link to it

[edit]you might have just given my nick new meaning[/edit]

Cheers newbielike, I've read and inwardly digested the info held therin.
Thanks for the clarification TP I tried that but I don't think it works with images, only pages. I say that because I tried "Find web pages that contain the term" as I could not find "pages that link to this url" I also tried "Find pages that link to the page" and each search produced no results, not even the page that I know has the image.
As I said earlier, no biggie, I just thought there would be a way to check easily, this must just be the case if you are running your own server I guess.
Thanks for the help though.

referrer logs would tell you, yes, that'd be what you're after. Does your host make them available?

I'm just waiting for a reply from them now J. I'd love to see what they look like.

[edit] Sorry I missed a couple. Kaniz: sorry to say I have no idea what it is you are suggesting . 1 x 1, check, have been down that road, but thanks for the help. Btw did you recognise the last two lines of my initial post?
