Topic awaiting preservation: What to do, what to do

I'm in my last year of highschool and I thought I knew what I wanted to do after. I've been in my schools graphics art program for 4 years now and I'm thinking of goin in that direction. I'm also in a machinist program, which I'm starting to not like.

I'm assuming most of the people in this place work in the field of graphic arts. I just want to know what's it like. You know, stories, experiences, and the like.

I don't really have any experiences to share with you about graphic arts. I would like to tell you that it is normal to feel that you don't know what you are going to do at your age. My wife and I have raise five children and I have worried more about the ones who knew what they wanted to do when they finished high school and didn't change their minds at least once during college than I did about the ones who switch majors several times before complete college.

A couple of the kids said they wanted to go to specialized training schools, like a music conservatory or an acting school. I told them that I wanted them to attend a university where they could be exposed to many different ideas and attitudes. It also makes it easier to switch majors if you get to college and find that you don't want to continue working in the field you chose when you were in high school.

One of our children wanted to attend a music conservatory to study violin. Because I insisted that he go to a university, he was able to switch his degree to computer science and stay at the same school when he discovered half way through the first semester that he didn't really want to study violin as a profession.

Keep your options open. The fact that you are questioning what you are going to do is a sign that you are thinking. This is a good thing. Keep questioning and investigating.

Also realize that you may not end up working in the area that you get your training in. I myself have a degree in physics, but work as a computer programmer and web designer and do a lot of work in computer graphics.

Ahhhh, it sounded like such a good deal. Do the machinist program for two years and in return you get a year off the regular four year course. Ahhhhh. Yeah your right, I should keep my options open. Funny thing is, most people expect you to know what you want to do after highschool, which really sucks. Thanks for the advice

I was somewhat in the same boat about a year ago. Well, not exactly the same situation, as I wanted to study cartoon animation in Canada (there are barely any animation careers and course around here) right after getting out of school, but I needed a portfolio, which I was supposedly going to develop within a year.

During that year I prepared myself to go there, taking courses of english (which I don't need THAT much, but still), french, graphic design (old skool graphic design, without the aid of computers, which was much more cooler than I expected), painting and computer assembly. I already know some drawing, however, during that year I realized a lot of stuff:

a) I was not going to be able to finance my airplane ticket.
b) While I am still convinced I want to study cartoon animation, I still much more knowledge on essnetial concepts,s uch as human anatomy.

So, what i did, is enter a local university and study an IT career. I love computers, so while I may not be able to study what I want at this momment, I am studying something else I am passoinated with. Sadly, most of my mates in the career didn't really like it, and left within the half of firstn semester, making their parents waste their money, and them wasting their time. And there are still a few bucnh of them that, while they are good at it, I suspect that they will ahte their jobs.

Due to such experience, something I always suggest to younger friends is that if they are not sure what they want to study, they should take a year to clear up their mind, and decide more clearly, rather than making a rushed decission.
