You can define any number of classes for any element, or completely independant of any particular element. There isn't actually any such thing as "the link class" except as it applies to what you've set up as classes specifically for links.. The tutorial you linked to gets into some pretty good detail it seems (I didn't give it a thorough reading, so I can't critique the content), so I won't go into much detail here, but the above two points are important ones.
