I've had many emails from complete PS newbies thanking me for the tutorials, they picked up exactly what I wanted them too and combined the tutorials. Maybe some of them are useless to you because you have experience with photoshop,

Koroshi, since it's Christmas, I will admit that I started out with tutorials like those and they do have their place in the broader scheme of things.

However, the main problem with those, and 90% of the tutorials on the internet, are that they rely heavily on layer effects. Back in the day, it was called filter abuse.

For example, overuse of the drop shadow and emboss effects. After the millionth image you've seen with this you'll see how cheesy it is.

Also, most of your tutorials involve running the clouds filter and then running another filter (find edges, lighting effects, patchwork texture). That's all of 2 steps.

Blind use of layer effects also ruins your images. In your reflecting text tutorial, the drop shadow on the upper text layer just kills any semblence of reflection.

I know this sounds a bit crazy, but we like to people to use their minds around here. That means learning to use the tools you're given and not mindlessly throwing effects around to get "cool" images. Perhaps you could devote a line of tutorials on one filter and delve into exactly what that filters does and how you can use it. A lot of them are powerful tools. Steve wrote an excellent tutorial on the displace filter.

And, finally, I'd like to comment on your first post.

It looked suspiciously like trolling for hits, but you did come back and reply so I have concluded that you are a real person and not a mindless webbot. I apologize if you were manhandled at the gate.

With that in mind, what was your purpose in posting?

Were you looking for constructive criticism/critiques? Were you putting it up as a contribution to the community? Were you looking for "wow, cool, that r0xx0rz" comments?

As it is, until you can answer this question in a post that's longer than one sentence I won't be sure of how to answer any of your posts.

Again, since this is the season to be jolly and whatnot, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and welcome you to the Asylum.

Koroshi, if you plan to hang around here, then please forgive our offensive nature towards you. Your first post was an advertisement for a website, so you'll find that everyone will be inclined to be angry at you, since right now you simply look like a spammer to us.

If you actually hang around and become a member of the community, then you'll find that we're not as cruel to new members as we may appear in this thread.

After the few first replies I decided to just leave and not come back. But you still don't understand, those are all basic. Im just starting to write a few more unique tutorials. Like this one I just wrote today - http://www.pixelayer.com/tut11.htm .

I posted this in this thread because I know nobody looks in the one designated for site reviews...

Hiya Koroshi! I already made some comments in your other thread in Site Reviews, but I'll reiterate on one important point. The full-size screencaps are not a good idea. You can easily trim away all of the background and toolbar, info window etc. and get a tighter, easier to read, quicker to download tutorial. You could also benefit by being a bit more "chatty" in your descriptions, since the images are all different size, the text shows up in different places, which makes it hard to follow.

Concerning the content of the tute, I tend to agree with silence, I like to avoid the layer effects and do my effects the hard way, and I urge newbies to do the same. Once you know how to do things using only the basic tools, you can always cheat a little for speed and use the effects, but that's just my way. I can see your point also, and maybe I'm just being an old fuddy-duddy of a dinosaur. Keep doing the tutes, I applaud your initiative! Now relax, and start using the feedback you get to build even better tutes, wrapped in an even better site.

Your pal, -doc-

indeed! You're now the most active member in the last 24 hours, welcome! Accept my apologies, didn't mean to get the ball rolling in the cruel direction, I thought it was another random spam for search engine rank.

Merry Christmas to you
