Topic: POW Week 62 - Beginnings (Page 1 of 1)

I'm going to go with a thematic topic, and I think it's appropriate for a thread started on the first day of the new year. No explanation necessary--I leave it open to interpretation and imagination.

Rules:
1. Photo needs to go along with the subject in some way.
2. Use thumbnails for photos with any dimension larger than 450 px or over 40 kb.
3. Post as many as you want.
4. At the end of the week the person who chose the topic will pick someone to choose the next topic. This isn't a "winner", just someone who gets to suggest the next topic.
5. No sigs

I'd also like to note that there is a new FAQ on the POW. I searched for one when I was trying to think of a topic so I could see what had already been done, but was unable to find anything. If there was an existing FAQ, it is not in the "Ozone Traditions" section, and a search on "POW" turned up nothing, so I went ahead and made one that talks a bit about the history of the event and lists all the topics:

Boy looks lonely over here!
Here's a new starter for a New Year
It's an oldie but I don't think they've been to the Asylum before.

Yes, it is quite lonely! Been sitting here by meself for quite some time. I suppose I should put something of my own up...

And what exactly is that in that photo? It's a bird of some sort, I believe, but I have no idea what kind.

It looks like a seagull in a yellow mask and you can just see the chick too.
I'll try to get something up for this POW I missed last weeks. Nice work on the FAQ shockko It's always good to have a ref' like that.

Here we call them plovers but they are more correctly "vanellus miles" - Masked Lapwing. When they have their chicks they are very aggro; in fact, the only reason I noticed these ones was because the mother ran onto the road chasing my car
Here is another photo, but not as clear, as I was taking it from the safety of my car .
They're quite hard to photograph, unless you're rich enough to have a telephone lens, because the father runs away with the chicks and the mother attacks you.

Ian: Wow, talk about aggressive parenting. It makes me appreciate the shots all the more now! (Didn't notice the chick the first time around... now it all comes together...)

briggl: Great pics... Hopefully I'll be able to put up photos like that someday...

Anyway, I went out and took this photo this morning, specifically for this theme. It's a winter thyme plant, and although I thought that we should be able to leave it outside during the winter (why else would they call it "winter thyme"?), my wife insisted on bringing it inside. You can see how the plant bends toward the light, and the new green shoots that have emerged since we brought it inside. I guess that shows you how much I know about plants.

He, it's the male that sits on the chicks, is actually sitting on about 5-6 chicks - that's why the feathers at the side, near the ground, are all fluffed out. It was just the one, lone chick that wouldn't quite fit under, in the rush to hide from the big, bad man in the car

Hmm... well, the week is up. I was hoping for a few more entries, but I believe it's time to move on. Ian, if you would do the honors...
