Topic awaiting preservation: Input/Output error on second hard drive

I have a fileserver that has 2 160g hard drives. All files are saved on hdb1 and then at the end of the night, via cron job and bash script, hdb1 is backed up to hdd1.

I am now getting an Input/Output error when trying to access the hdd1.

The hard drive is mounted and I have checked fstab to make sure. I can cd into the hard drive but I can not do anything. Just errors.

from looking at the log, it looks like the drive is going bad. It's brand new and everything has been working fine for the past 2 months (when I set it up) but it just started doing this.

I am running slackware 10.

Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated!

What is the make of the HD's ?

I am aware that IBM have problems with the glass platters overheating,.

Is it possible that you HD's are overheating ? At night when the HD's is backing itself up is more than likely when the HD's would be prone to a rise in temperature, perhaps it is worth checking this up, of course, it might be too late now if you are getting thiose errors.

Yes, your hard disk drive is definitely on its way out the door... the errors it's reporting are bad sectors on the drive. You might be able to perform a fsck (filesystem check) on the drive to correct these errors by marking them as bad so Linux does not do any further writes/reads from this sector.

well i got it back working with no data loss it seems.

here was the deal, since the motherboard only has 2 ide slots and i am using 3 hard drives, i had to mount the third hard drive as a slave to the CDRom. The CDRom went out which mad the hard drive not accessable.

So, I removed the cdrom, remounted the third hard drive and BAM! hard drive is back in order.

I would follow jcoe's advice and run a FSCK check anyways, just in case there are bad sectors, while you still can.

In May/04 I bought a US$130 SilenX PSU.
In Sep/04 I bought a US$130 (after rebate) 200GB Maxtor HD.
In Nov/04 I bought a US$100 Linksys wireless router.

In Nov/04, my PSU went down.
Three weeks ago, my router went down.
Two weeks agos, my HD went down (four months after warranty expiring).

None of this stuff were bought in Brazil and I am in Brazil now so I have no easy way to claim warranty, where possible..

They don't do stuff like before. My old computer, with 4-5 year-old parts, is rock and steady. Never failed.

that is no shit. i have a computer that i bought 7 years ago. that thing is still going strong. has a new hard drive just because i wanted to have a bigger one (doesn't every man )

i ran fsck on the disk and everything is fine with all the drives. all drives are nice and settled in a new box with a bigger processor and more memory.

freaked me out man! thought i was going to loose my job over that one hahaha.
