When I made my site, I've decided (ab)use the fact that Gecko accepts GIF as favicon to put my latest avatar. Still, if the userAgent is not Gecko my site uses the real .ico file. Of course I won't use a flashing animated GIF as favicon. My retina is as sensitive as yours. ;) Alas I have found no official spec about favicons, but since there's the word "icon" in the term it sounds logical that only real icons should be allowed.
