Single Transferable Vote.

Here in British Columbia, Canada, when we vote this May in our Provincial election we will also, via referendum, vote yes or no to change our 'method' of voting from, the current system of 'first past the post' to the the 'single transferable vote.'

This method was designed, if you will, by the 'Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform'

quote:
The Assembly was an independent, non-partisan assembly of 160 randomly selected British Columbians, with a mandate to look at how votes cast in provincial elections translate into seats in the Legislature.

The link has all the details and some decent 'animations' showing how it all works.

The system in Ireland apparently is the closest to what's been proposed here... variations are used elsewhere.

So... I'd like to hear what "you" think about this idea. Some of you have
experience with similar systems... some don't. I'd like to know as much as I can from 'you the inmates' ALL opinions are welcome.

Perhaps most appealing, to me at least

quote:
". . . The STV system perhaps comes closest to an ideal electoral system. It combines the virtues of proportionality with those of preferential voting. It is a system which politicians, given a choice, would probably least like to see introduced but which voters, given a choice, should choose.? ? David Farrell, Comparing Electoral Systems, Herts.: Prentice Hall, 1997 (reprinted by Macmillan 1998, 1999).

If politicians don't like it you just know.. there's something good about it. =)

It's great for smaller parties. Under this system people wont feel obligated to vote to keep someone they dislike from getting elected, instead, they can vote primarily for whoever they actually want, and then use their second choice for the larger party which is closer to their own beliefs.

The libertarian parties in Canada and the USA have been calling for this sort of system for years now. As well as locally I know the BC Marijuana party has been trying to get a system like this in place. I'd like to see it pass and hopefully it does a good job (which primarily should be to ensure that the NDP never gain a seat again).

Cheers to BC for finally recognizing that it's supposed to be the people who elect the leader.
