Topic awaiting preservation: The Steve Jobs NeXTSTEP 3.0 demo circa 1992

I just watched the video of Steve Jobs demo of NeXTSTEP 3.0 circa 1992 ( the large version takes ~34Mb ). Wow, back in those days I was on Atari STe and dreaming on the ads of the NeXT stations. I knew they rocked but I didn't knew they rocked that hard and were that ahead of their time.

Atari ST? One of my buds was heavy into programming and did some very amazing things with his Atari ST for the time.
I was cruising with an Amiga 2000 back then.
Good times.

Wish I could see the movie. All mirrors that I tried are just spinning. Even Save As is just spinning. Hmm...
I'll try again sometime tomorrow.

I remember reading when Jobs first came out with his NeXT machine. Read several articles about it in several mags because I was an intense geek back then. One of the articles reported that someone in the crowd jumped up and screamed like a giddy little school girl.

And MacOS is the gui MS stole the ideas for Windows. Like MacOs is a copy of the ideas that spawn in an R&D departement of HP in the late 70's.

What kind of thing ? I'm rather in the mood for 68000 coding.

Did you managed to download the video ?

He was into graphics and games.
Doing fancy-smancy stuff that Paradox(?) was known for.
Serious skills.
Right about now, either making tons of money or sitting in a prison cell.

I'd love to have a next system. They were freakin expensive back in their day. Now you can find them on ebay for about a $100.

I don't know if I would call it stealing. Steve transfered the ideas his company used to create NextStep when he shut down NEXT and was rehired by Apple.

Actually it was Xerox, not HP, that developed the first GUI when doing the research for SmallTalk and creating the Star system. That research project started in the late '60s and came to an end in the early '80s.

That's the funniest thing I've ever heard.

First, Apple BOUGHT NeXT, Inc. (Some would say NeXT was paid to acquire Apple, heh.)

Second, MacOSX _IS_ NeXTSTEP. It's not a new system, it's NeXTSTEP with a few added features and a new UI. Apple bought NeXT, Steve Jobs took over, and he took his NeXTSTEP and made it super for the Macs.

Don't any of you KNOW your computer history? I'm so ashamed.

EDIT: Since hyperbole seems to be the only one knowing what's going on...

Xerox PARC, while working on their interfaces for Smalltalk and so on, made the GUI (and the mouse, in fact). They liked giving tours to people, since they were basically paid there to just have fun coding, their ideas would never be used for anything practical (Xerox was very stupid in this respect, since PARC invented many things in common use today -- the GUI, the mouse, the laser printer, ethernet...). On one of those tours, Steve Jobs (who had recently made millions on his new computer company) decided the GUI was the future. Jef Raskin was working on the Macintosh (basically, what he ended doing in his Canon Cat and RHCI), but Steve decided to take over the Macintosh project and make it into his GUI. At this time, Microsoft wanted to make apps for Mac, and did so (Word was actually well-accepted by Mac users, up until version 6.0). After Steve was forced to leave Apple, the new CEO made a contract with Microsoft over Word, which ended up allowing MS to use the rights of the Apple-like GUI in their antitrust case (Xerox's GUI was very different from Apple's, interestingly.)

So, Steve Jobs, after he left, built the NeXT, but it never became popular. But it was very well designed, and even better than the Macintosh.

Later on, when Apple was in bad shape and needed a new system, they ended up turning to NeXT and bought the entire company. Steve Jobs became the CEO of Apple once again (with a salary of $1, to this day). And then the iMac (bought time for Apple), OSX (retooled NeXTSTEP), G5 (upgraded PowerPC, which both Macs and NeXTcubes used), and iPod. The rest is history.
