Meaning there would be no content to go in between an opening and a closing tag, thus making a two-tag system redundant and unsound. any element that does contain content, needs the opening tag to tell the browser where the content starts, and the closing tag to tell it where it ends. otherwise, it has no real way to be certain the content of that particular tag has ended.
