The thing that is most important to me when I draw is that the objects have weight.

I'm not always concerned that the form or the texture or the lighting is perfect, as long as the object I've drawn has a feeling of weight to it - whatever it is feels like it is actually an object sitting there in real space.

You've got that feeling with most of this. I like that =)

I really like the angular shading strokes you've got throughout the pencil sketches too. It's got a sharpness, but not rigid...gives a good feeling overall to the surface. The blending could certainly use refinement - the transitions between light/dark. they don't need to be smooth, and blurring/smudging would certainly ruin the feel, but the in-between tones need to be fleshed out better.

The two blue faces up above I particularly love.

keep it up - and get some finished work out there for us...

Ruski

...wow, yes, brilliant..

I'd love a copy of that first one (and very much like the fifth one)

Dammit I'd go as far as saying I'd PAY for it - I'm no artist, or critic, but I know what I like and well there's something very sweet in a spoookie kinda way that just appeals... - on a side note - reminds me of Spirited Away, not specifically, but in mood (does that make sense?)

keep up the good work!

ps.

i'm a little bit annoyed.

a month ago i started a portrait (just pencil) of someone i know and have been struggling to give my drawing the exact type of depth and weight you've achieved, particularly in this drawing:

(sorry, i chopped up & rotated your sketch)

very nice.

...off to grab my sketchpad...

Kitty thanks, yes I am influenced by Hayao Miyazaki alot.

But I do not directly imitate art, I rather imitate it's mood and I am very much draw to dark/spooky kind of things. =)

LaSun, my best advice is: in order to capture the mass there has to be an interesting transition from shadows to light, otherwise there is nothing to draw..

Pay alot of attention to how light affects the head and what kind of shadows does it cast, not all the dhadows are same. Some are lighter others are darker. Also look for reflective light, midlight, highlight carefully and dont confuse them as being the same thing.

You cannot just work with one pencil, use at least 3 different ones like HB, 2B, 4B . I personally like to go lighter , simply because I do not have to worry about making it accidently too dark.

=)
