I've found a few places:
http://www.ebookstand.com and http://www.instantpublishercolor.com/ but know nothing of the quality of either. I'm hoping someone within these hallowed halls has had some personal experience with full color print on demand publishers and guide me a bit.

I'm currently using CafePress to spit out some product manuals, full color cover and back but basically xerox copy black and whie quality on the insed. Fine for that, but I now have an interest in publishing high quality perfect bound books with complete illustration on every page (children's books).

Anybodies gots any idears? thanks

There are a couple of such places near me... can't find the name of the one I'm thinking of... and I've just got off the phone from one I did find and I'm waiting for a call back on some prices. Another friend has an interest in this also so that info will be for her.

The place I'm trying to find I know prints 'One of'. where as the outfit I just talked with requires a minimum run of 40 books. So what I was thinking is... if you want I'll stop by either one or both these outfits ...ask to see the finished product... touchy feely type of thing and perhaps snag a copy of something.... and mail it to you.

Some of the info I picked up from this one placeI'm sure you already know.... but I'll pass it on just in case.

If you have everything already to go they can deal with Quark or Indesign files.... or a Hi-Rez PDF

Bindings can vary from 'Perfect Bind' (Pocket-book type) to 'stitched'

Paper weight for kids books recommended min 80-lb. 100lb matt better.

Then we got into the 'bleed' on Cover and pages etc.... pages always multiples of 4. Keep to standard sizes. eg 8.5 x 11.... avoid cut-offs.... Oh ya... I asked about 4 colour.

Anyway... let me know if there's something I can do here for you.... like I said... a touchy feely report... maybe a sample.... tell me what... and if I can, I will.

40 min is just about on demand levels!

If you could report on quality that'd be fantastic, and if I could get you to mail me a copy of the work, even better (let me know what it's going to cost and I can pass that to you via paypal or mail)! Does the company have a web site or phone number I can call?

If you need to relay any details that shouldn't go through a public forum you can get me at webspam at disk919 dot com.

thanks!

When I track down the one specific company I'm looking for I'll let you know. I saw a 'profile' of the company on local tv a few months back. Took you on a brief but quite comprehensive step-by-step thru the entire process and it looked pretty damn decent.

The end product they featured was a One of.. 'family history' Coffee-table size book this fella had done for his aging parents. From what one could see on tv it looked very good and perhaps more importantly the 'customer' was very pleased with the results. So that's the outfit I'm trying to locate. Might take me a day or two. The other company hasn't yet got back to me. I'll get back to you asap.

Not 100% sure but I think this is the company I had in mind. I'll phone in the morning to see what I can learn. Seems I recall something said about Ireland... and I see there's something in North Carolina.

Click link 'Have you written a kids book?'

# A 16-page full-color picture book can be selling in bookstores for under $8.50
# You can buy copies in any quantity, at any time, for 40% of the retail cost or less... about $3.20 per book for that 16-page book!

Anyway... I'll call in the morning.
