Actually, they taste very good, if you like really chewy stuff (my wife says some of her foreign students don't like them beause they are too chewy). Basically it's steamed glutinous rice mashed together with beans and stuff. I don't know exactly how they are made. Interesting note: rice cakes like these are called by the generic term [i]ddeok[/i] in Korean, and this is what the original Biblical translators used to translate "bread," because most Koreans didn't know what bread was at the time, and [i]ddeok[/i] was the closest thing in form they could find to Western bread. It's kind of funny to read about Jesus breaking the rice cakes and fishes, or handing out rice cakes and wine at the last supper. When we take communion in church, they call the bread [i]ddeok[/i] even though it's actually bread. There is no native Korean word for bread (in Korean it's called [i]bbang[/i], which comes from the French [i]pain[/i]). Reminds me of the time my wife first saw ravioli and called them "Italian [i]mandu[/i] (which is what we would call Korean ravioli, basically ;))." Ahem, anyway, on to next week...
