Ok so it's not so much a review, but I've basicly laid out my idea for a site I'm playing with. I've put it together in PS CS2 and I've never put anything together quite like this before so I'm having a chore or figuring out exactly how to turn it into a "functioning site".

thanks!
Rob

I like orange. It's such a nice, warm color.

If you are familiar with CSS, I don't think that should be very hard to put together. The way it is set up now, though, you're looking at a fixed-width design. You might want to consider redesigning for variable width so you can accomodate a wider range of screen resolutions/browser window sizes.

As to how to turn this into a functioning site, is there a particular issue you are having difficulty with?

If that's from a PSD, it'll be simple to cut it into images usable for variable width.

Could someone point me to a tut that could explain a little more in detail how to break it apart in such a manner that it will keep the design and variable width? I'm really tired of some of my blah designs and wanted to create something a little more slick looking...

I'll try and post results as I get working on it.

If this is going to be CSS based then I like it! If not then why not!!!

Breaking the site apart for a fluid design is quite simple. Instead of using fixed widths just enter percentages but you'll have to do some math to make it look nicely evened, not that much just a little ;)

Also I'm finding the gap between the links and the little boxes a tad bit over, considering placing an advert there?? Because it's kind of distracting...

I just noticed this... your background isn't just a single color but three shades of a single color. You're going to have to do some extra work there to make it look nicely smooth in CSS if you're considering variable width. If not good work!

For the outermost shadow/border, you need eight images:

  • North: 1px wide, tall image of the top shadow
  • East: 1px tall, wide image of the right shadow
  • South: 1px wide, tall image of the bottom shadow
  • West: 1px tall, wide image of the left shadow
  • NorthWest: the top left corner shadow - including "HAWAII VEGAS USERS GROUP V.12" text
  • NorthEast: the top right corner shadow - including "site designed by wayoutwest graphics & design" text
  • SouthEast: the bottom right corner shadow
  • SouthWest: the bottom left corner shadow

The large white "hawaii vegas users group" should be one image which will be aligned to the left.
The background "SONY VEGAS" and skyline should be one (or two if you like) image(s) aligned to the right.
For the white/gray band in center, you can probably get away with one tall repeating background image (or do the N, E, S, W, etc. thing again if you need).
Each box should be a separate image as well as the "vegas dvda acid sound forge" text.

To get the nice corners in the gray title boxes / transparent boxes underneath, you'll probably have to do the eight images again.
Throw in an image for each gray box title and another image for the gray background.
The boxes with the content (J Lo, etc.) I would just make white and use opacity (modern standard browsers) & filter: alpha (IE) to make transparent. You could also use transparent PNG which would probably fail in IE or a white GIF dithered with transparent pixels which might cause seizures on certain screens/resolutions.

The gradient from light orange to dark orange behind those boxes should be one long, short repeating background image aligned to the left (or right would work, too, if you like).

...and of course one image for each navigation text link and the bottom li'l banners.

what the !@#$ is everyone's problem with a fixed width site?!?! Especially this one? C'mon!!

mho0000000000....

This site, or more accurately, graphic, as shown, looks like an entry page where interior pages may deviate from this layout, everything about it is saying "small amount of content teasers in fixed width areas leading to more elsewhere". Which leads me directly to my point: fixed width or liquid should be a choice decided by the content you're presenting! It's not a mantra to be repeated dogmatically regardless.

um, got any content yet?

:p
