It's a little big, I know (file size, that is), but optimisation is the next step.

[edit]Eep! Got a bit of a residue there...[/edit]

How about making it a bit lighter? I like the effect, but I think it could benefit from a lighter orange

You can get the residue to go away.

In IR, select all of the frames of the animation. Rightclick, and a selection menu will appear.

Make sure to set it to automatic.

check it in imageready and click [save>save optimized] again to save the animation with transparency. If you close this document, photoshop will ask you again if you want to save. If you click yes, PS will save the layered animation in a *.psd file.

The whole problem comes from a certain GIF optimisation technique. For some animations, changes between frames only affect small areas. In optimized GIF animations, the next frame contains only the pixels that have changed, all the other pixels are transparent. (this is the 'do not dispose' option in the menu.) This works wonders for the filesize, since the file can just include the instruction "add 64 transparent pixels here", instead of describing the 64 pixels which haven't changed from the previous frame.

The issue arises when this technique is used in transparent animations. Since the transparent color is used to signify pixels that have not changed, you can't actually make pixels transparent this way. So, those pixels just simply sit and stay there.

But hey, it's already looking nice! First I thought you used the [stylize>wind] filter, but it may be that you fiddled around with masks... a good job in any case.

Thanks for the help mahjqa. Indeed, masks it was. Picked an orange colour, drew a 1px vertical line, then used the step-fade brush effect to fade the ends out. Copied and pasted it a whole bunch of times at random heights, then applied a mask to the layer, a gaussian blurred text layer of my name, originally. Then I just made two frames of the layer in its two extreme positions and tweened them. With your trick added on we end up with a fairly hefty file at 80kb, but I like the effect of it.

Just out of curiosity, why does the sig take up so much vertical space?

Ah, I see. I was just wondering if there was a special reason...
