I read about this. Quite lovely what we have become is it not? Wasn't it said in the aftermath of 9/11 that if we changed our lives to an extent such as this and many other things that the terrists have won?

Another gross violation of privacy are these "backscatter" x-ray machines they plan on installing in the near future.

Of course, nothing really compares to the recently passed Real ID Act when it comes to privacy violations. In a time when identity theft is becoming more and more prevalent, they want to give more eyes access to our information.

But hey, there is soo much profit to be made selling these technologies to the government. Oracle is said to be designing the database system for the national IDs, countless RFID manufacturers have been cleaning up, Taser International is making a fortune by selling all our law enforcment their questionable safe products, and this does not even cover the Military-Indutrial complex and the trillions they siphon yearly. The American taxpayers and our government is being looted from within by the crooked politicians on Capitol Hill.

What happens when the well dries up? I guess they can move on to greener pastures, namely China and India and we'll be left to fend for ourselves. The sad thing is most people won't know what hit them.

Maybe Mussolini was right when he said, "The truth is that men are tired of liberty."

They've been trying to push biometric ID cards over here (UK).

What I see as the greatest problem with this is the fact that, once faked, biometric IDs cannot be changed - you can't change your fingerprint (easily faked) like you can a PIN or password.

Once defrauded and having run out of body-bits to use as ID (as the fakers' technology catches up with the ID technology) victims of ID-theft will never be rid of complications...

Ya well that's the sort of thing that would get the UK crossed off my list of potential new places to live.

I just think Blair and Bush should be shaved-off altogether, but I can't see it happening any time soon. Might as well stay inside the new Iron Curtain till they've finished pissing all over the rest of the world. It'll probably be safer once we're all numbered and herded, and though we might not actually live longer without liberty and the pursuit of happiness (not just in the US), it'll certainly feel like it...

These permanent measures that are only supposed to be temporary are always scary. But just wait until we get hit real hard again and it is far more dead than ~3k. Don't you suppose people will be asking why we didn't do more to stop it? Where do we draw the line between protecting citizens lives vs. protecting their privacy? It is a very tough call.

I would never deny that. In fact, I'm all for giving British police forces more powers to detect and deter crime...

...but what I'm seeing instead is drivers being automatically fined for farting loudly in traffic, then each and every little indiscretion being recorded officially as "crime solved", which leads to claims that overall crime is down and a majority of it is solved anyway (through a process of selective tallies)...

...and all the time, there are more cameras, more fines, and (amazingly) more violent street crime than ever before, more decent people being criminally taxed (however you want to read that) while life-destroying rapists, muggers, and ferral minors are getting away (often literally) with murder.

You'd think that with all the automatic measures, and with more cameras per head than any other city in the world, London would be safer - the police might be more able to walk the beat rather than cruising for speeders... but no!
They're still in their cars, but there's never one around when you need them - does that sound a tad familiar?


Recent publicity surrounding the shopping-centre bans of hoodies and caps caught my attention (about bloody time). Garnered out-spoken support from government, and 'happy-slapping' was made an issue in the same releases - a despicable trend in youths to film random attacks on strangers with their mobiles. It is a serious issue that shows every sign of escalating.

I say, bring back the stocks by all means - but stop invading the minutae of average lives and making criminals of ordinary, decent people.
