Topic awaiting preservation: semi-transparent to fully-transparent gradient in PS7 (Page 1 of 1)

Hello,
I'm trying to make a semi-transparent white to full-transparent gradient. How do I do this?

At first, I clicked the Gradient tool then I clicked Foreground to Transparent. It didn't work.

I want to save this image as a PNG with alpha transparency (is that what it's called?).

Exactly what happens with the foreground to transparent preset?

Ok. I'll try to explain as clearly as I can.
1) Created a new file with a transparent background
2) Then I used the gradient tool. In the Gradient Editor, I clicked Foreground to Transparent. I applied the gradient to the file, but it turns the whole (canvas?) white. There's no transparency, or semi-transparency at all.

I'm probably doing something wrong, this is probably the wrong method. What's the easiest way to make a gradient from semi-transparent white to full transparency?

That's what you've got to do...

just to double check, i followed the same steps -
new file, transparent background
select gradient tool
select 'foreground to transparent' option
click on canvas, drag across

white > transparent gradient as desired.

of course, you'll probably want to do this on a new layer so that you can lower the opacity to get the 'semi-transparent' part.

There is an option to turn transparency on/off. It's in the option bar across the top or something. Just says Transparency with a box. If that's not on, no transparency regardless of what the pre-set says.

It's a foible that got me just yesterday.

besides GIF not being able to compress as low as PNG and not being able to even be translucent?...no, not really

I clicked the Transparency checkbox, like warjournal said, and it worked! Thanks a lot for all the help everyone.

Glad that was it. Might have to add it to the Foibles and Stupid Mistakes list.

And that translucent deal is great...so long as you're not worried about your visitors using IE

The png is only for decoration, so for browsers that can support it, they'll be treated to a nice effect. IE doesn't support the PNG, so it's being hidden with some CSS it doesn't understand either.
