Topic awaiting preservation: New Arizona Book (Page 1 of 1)

So, as soon as the book I co-authored, Weird Texas, is due out, I'll be hitting the road to work on Weird Arizona. Just signed the contract and I'll be the sole author on this one. Woo-hoo!

The point of my post is not to vaunt, however, but to ask everyone, if you know about any interesting sights around Arizona, please share! The kinds of things I'm looking for:

• Weird/unique museums.
• Strange history.
• Legends.
• Unusual people.
• Unique homes.
• Weird sights/attractions.

You're not limited to this list, of course. Anything you think might fit, feel free to post it here or to e-mail me about it. If you've got a personal story or would like to share how you heard a particular story goes, send it my way -- some contributions may make it in the book!

maps to buried bodies do you any good?

Hrmmm, I've heard (from someone serious) that somewhere in the middle of the desert in Arizona or New Mexico there's a sign with what looks like gibberish on it, but it's actually from some literature and means "Nowhere" or something.

Will try to find out if it's in Arizona and where.

Heres a few facts i gather from the net:

- The original London Bridge was shipped stone-by-stone and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City.
- Tombstone, Ruby, Gillette, and Gunsight are among the ghost towns scattered throughout the state.
- The world's largest solar telescope is located at Kitts Peak National Observatory in the city of Sells.
- The Arizona trout is found only in (oddly enough) Arizona.
- The cactus wren is the official state bird. It grows seven to eight inches long and likes to build nests in the protection of thorny desert plants like the arms of the giant saguaro cactus.
- Arizona is home of the Grand Canyon National Park.
- The amount of copper on the roof of the Capitol building is equivalent to 4,800,000 pennies.
- The state's most popular natural wonders include the Grand Canyon, Havasu Canyon, Grand Canyon Caves, Lake Powell/Rainbow Bridge, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, Sedona Oak Creek Canyon, Salt River Canyon, Superstition Mountains, Picacho Peak State Park, Saguaro National Park, Chiricahua National Monument, and the Colorado River.
- Located in Fountain Hills is a fountain believed to be the tallest in the world.
- Four Corners is noted as the spot in the United States where a person can stand in four states at the same time.
- The Hopi Indians of Arizona are noted for growing their multicolored corn.
- Oraibi is the oldest Indian settlement in the United States. The Hopis Indians founded it.

Thanks for the help, guys. Like I said, if you come across anything, just send me a message. I'll be working on this book for about the next 16 months.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get a new Web site up soon and will be able to share the adventure. Working on setting up a webcam in my car to take a picture of where I'm at every few minutes. It won't be live, unfortunately -- at least not yet -- but I think I've figured out a way to record my GPS location each time a picture is taken.
