well, its been quite some time since i have done any web design, but recently a friend asked for my help. i opened up ol dreamweaver mx and went at it...to my surprise windows security keeps blocking any page i build that has layers on it. its protecting me from "active content." this is very annoying. does anyone even use layers anymore because of this?

There's no such thing as a <layer>.

If you're using IE, stop; use Firefox or Opera instead.

I also recommend not using Microsoft Windows as your OS; try Debian or Gentoo GNU/Linux.

Can you use Windows programs on them, like Photoshop?

Yes, but it's not necessarily simple.

You can use an incarnation of WINE.
You can also emulate the entire Windows OS or actually run it in a virtual machine.

Never done it myself, GIMP is just as good for my needs (I imagine if I were a power Photoshopper, GIMP would still be plenty good). The GUI takes some getting used to, but there is that GIMPShop which makes it feel like Photoshop if you need it.

Photoshop CS running on SuSE Linux using CodeWeavers' modified WINE:

*popsin*

VMWare is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Works wonderfully, plops Windows on Linux. Not free -- but worth checking into.

Second, who cares what HE runs? The problem is every other person on the planet who uses *gak* MSIE. How does he make it work for *them*?

I do hear good things about VMWare, but naturally I am drawn to free & open source software first.

Several worth trying.

I'd like to suggest it's a Windows XP SP2 security thing going on. I've seen it myself a few times but I don't use Windows anymore. ;p
