Topic awaiting preservation: moving a domain name to new host

OK, gonna exploit my ignorance here.

I have a domain name registered through goDaddy. I also have a domain name and a site hosted somewhere else. I want the domain name registered through godaddy to point to the other domain name and host.

I have changed the DNS to point to the hosting site. Problem is, the old domain name is not doing anything. Just timing out. What am I missing here?

So, I have mydomain.com set at godaddy. The name server is set to the same as mynewdomain.com

after making DNS changes you always have to give the new settings a day or so to propagate, so it's not unusual at all if you still get time outs for a bit.

Apart from that I don't think there's anything you could be missing.. their nameserver config page doesn't let you enter anything but the server name does it?

I'd say just give it a few more hours and see if it doesn't solve itself.

well i did a whois and the godaddy registered name is pointing to the yahoo name server that was given. i did this a couple of days ago and this morning i just wanted to see if it had taken effect and that's when i found out it was timing out.

i know that some servers can take up to 72 hours before they populate but since the whois info was set already I just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up

Who's nameserver config page? Freakin yahoo!'s doesn't give you much to work with. I just logged in and checked what the dns setting were and copied them over to godaddy.

That's not going to do it. Yahoo would need to register your old domain name on their name servers as well for that to work.

What you need is either a parked or redirected domain through yahoo so that they handler your nameserving or a redirect through godaddy.com

Ahh after a quick peek at my godaddy account you need to use the Domain forwarding option

Bit, thanks for that. I actually found that but I had to park it at GoDaddy, wait for that to take place and then change the forwarding. Whew.....no I just have to wait for that to take effect and see if it works.
