This is a know [url=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q177/3/78.asp&NoWebContent=1]issue with IE[/url]. There is a hacky work around and that involves placing an iframe 1 z-index below the element you are displaying above the selection box. The problem now is, I have an iframe above the selection box, but it must be set to allowtransparency, which cancels out the nifty effect of covering the select.
