Topic awaiting preservation: Brand New Computer

I finally got my own computer. I had been living with my mother up until a couple of weeks ago. I am now in Austin, TX going to school.

System:
AMD Athlon64 3000+
Asus A8N-SLI MoBo
Western Digital 120GB SATA HD
Two MSI GeForce PCX 6800 256MB Video Cards
1GB of RAM
Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro w/ 7.1 surround sound
Microsoft Windows XP Pro x64
19" ViewSonic Perfect Flat CRT
LG 16x SuperMulti DVDRW
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse


I love this computer but anyone thinking of upgrading to a WinXP x64, I suggest waitng about a month. There are many drivers not availible for different parts and also most AV software won't run on WinXP x64. I had to get a substitute keyboard today for my wireless seeing and microsoft has yet to update the drivers for the wireless keyboards and mice to run smoothly on x64. I had to continually unplug and replug my wireless receiver.

I just got a new computer as well and as it is not as hefty as yours it is certainly a step up from the 443mhz processor i had for about 7years
I do have the same monitor though. IT ROCKS!

Why not run Linux or BSD? It provides all the 64bit goodness you could desire! :P </obligatory>

Anyway, I'm surprised -- is WinXP 64-bit incompatible with the 32-bit drivers of WinXP? I would think that they could interoperate.

My main concern with running Linux would simply be compatibilty with my games and other programs. I would switch if was sure i wouldn't have problems

Depends on the game I guess. They don't make a lot of games for Linux. I think the do for NWN and such but not a lot. I think that is one of the things that really holds people back from using Linux for the most part. That and there's a bit of a learning curve but...eigh, it's not hard to convert over

Yeah, I simply dual-boot (keep Windows AND Linux) on my machine for games (though I only really play Warcraft III), and for just about everything else, there's a free equivalent (I use OpenOffice for everything MS Office does, though AbiWord instead of MS Word is also a good choice; Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim, Totem (video playing), Gimp (though not as good as photoshop) and Audacity (sound editing) tend to do everything I require).

It's of course geared to power-users, and if you're intimidate by a command line, may not be the thing for you. However, I like it since it lets me get what I want to do done, in less time than it would otherwise take.

GimpShop tries to at least emmulate the way PS is layed out but it is still just not PS

I also have a dual boot so I can use PS and play NWN now. Just about everything else I use Linux. Plus you can test out webpages and stuff pretty easily. Even though there's Firepages, most servers are linux based so getting the paths and stuff is a problem
