Yeah absolute positioning is ok if used correctly, unfortunatly when developers/designers first learn about CSS they often start creating layouts with absolute positioning where they should be using floats, they end up abusing it. :( The secret of absolute positioning is to use it with relative positioning on parent tags, that way when content or size changes you maintain a better consistency.
