Topic awaiting preservation: Does this happen to anyone too?

I have been waking up at 3 am with the sound of a weeping person. I say its a girl becasue that is how it sounds. The weeping that I hear, I can tell is filled with so much sorrow as this whatever it is cannot contain its grief. It has been happening for a period of two years and I am so curious to know why. Its like around 3, a little before 3, or sometimes a little after 3 am. I hear it so loud I know for certain is a human weeping. I went outside one night with my flashligh thinking it was someone being hurt or abused and I could help, but there was no one there. My husband said I am mistaking it for cats wailing. I know it isn't.

The only thing that could come to close to that was one night when I was 15 or so. I awoke to the wailing of a child right outside my window. It scared me frozen for a few seconds. But it did, in fact, turn out to be a cat that made that noise. I was convinced it was a child for those few seconds though.

I am very interested in knowing the source of this sound. I have several questions that come to mind.

How often does this happen? Every night? If so, why don't you record it?

Does anyone else, like your husband, hear the weeping?

If you just sit up through the night without going to sleep do you think you would hear this or does it only happen as you are awaken?

Are there cats in your area? Are you sure it isn't one of them?

Do you ever wake up and feel paralyzed, can't move, feel like you are suffocating along with these noises?

I have a condition known as sleep paralysis in which you wake up before your body's motor functions have returned. You will also experience halluinations, such as movments and sound (I've experienced both) that can really freak you out. I used to hop out of bed screaming because I thought there were people in the house.

I dunno, worth checking out.

I don't think its a matter of ignorance. I am of sound mind. I would never make it up. It is very real.
Cats do make a crying wailing sound when they are mating. Right? But this is not not it. Its very
fustrating for me to not understand. I can't say where I believe it may even come from. The feelings I have is sympathy for this cry who I feel is helpless in its situation. Its a heartbroken cry. My heart goes out to it. In the time frame when it happens would lead me to believe its no animal. It always happens mostly at 3 and it has happened lets say about 20 times. I actually am in deep sleep and am awaken by the weeping and it continues for minutes, let say about 3. I wake my husband but as he awakens, it stops.

Setup a tape recorder - if you wake up having heard the sound and check the tape recorder, you can immediately have confirmation. Then it's just a matter of staking out the area one night.

If you heard it but it's not on the tape, I suggest seeing a doctor (though clearly it could be something harmless like a very real and recurring dream).

It'd be my first guess - whenever someone reports something weird around their sleeping it has to be the first thing to eliminate. A hypnopompic state can involve both visual and auditory hallucinations.

I've had one SP attack (search the old threads for a whole spooky thread on this kind of thing) and it was very scary - there are lots of variations within related parasomnia that could easily account for this kind of thing.
