Topic awaiting preservation: old hard drive + new computer = problems

I have a computer that has Win2k server on it. I need to put that hard drive in a different computer to be the main hard drive. However, when I put it in the new computer and boot up I get a stop error (0x00000074) i think... I can get the exact error when I get back to the office.

But I really don't think it should be this big of a deal. I know the hard drive is fine and the computer it is going into is fine. But when I put the drive into the new computer it starts to boot up and as soon as 2000k server starts, it goes to the blue screen and gives me the stop error.

I am going to try to boot with the disk in the cd drive but I am not sure that is going to work either...any suggestions?

the problem probabyl is that the harddisk is connected to some other port in your new system, and windows can't find it's files.

read up on fixing a boot.ini to take care of this.

hmmmm....sounds a bit scary. I'll see what I can find again but I did a quick search and didn't come up with much. Maybe I'm just not using the right keywords.

You'd probably need to start by having it as the slave drive so you can access the files on it without it actually trying to boot off it. You need to edit the boot.ini file to tell it which drive to reference its boot images from.

Although, frankly, the fact you're getting a BSoD stop error tells me it's booting windows, however the fact that major system components such as the processor and motherboard and such have changed is preventing windows from loading, inwhich case it needs to be reinstalled, or possibly repaired. Hmm... repairing could work, actually. If you still have the installation CD, try booting off that and telling it to repair the installation.

I agree with Skaarjj that it is booting into Windows.
Its likly the IDE drivers are not compatiable with the new MB.
If you can put an put the HD back in the computer you took it from go into the device manager and find the drivers there and remove them, Then when it asks you to reboot click No, shutdown the PC, and swap the HD.

Also you can try changing the IDE drivers to something more generic such asthe website suggests.

This can be done by doing a repair/reinstall of Windows as mentioned by Skaarjj.
