I am aware that Eclipse is available, but I am really seeking educated opinions on this if anyone can help. I'm new and I'm willing to try anything

It gets some time to get used to Eclipse, but once you're "in", not only is it one of the very best IDEs around, and by far the best for Java, but it's also one of the most clever and powerful applications I have seen. Compares to monsters like 3dsmax for 3d or Photoshop for 2d.

I have been working with the RCP and the plugin frameworks, these are both pretty advanced, and very useful. There is also the BIRT reporting tool which will hit a major functionality milestone in december. I like eclipse, and it has come a long way as an IDE, it is now much greater, and allows you to work in many different languages due to the plugin nature of the application. There are somethings with eclipse that have caused some people to shake their head, the number one complaint that I have heard is the SWT library, which rivals Swing. I like the SWT, but people I work with are not as excited about it because of its non-standard nature. If you make use of these libraries you will have to decide if that is important to you. If it is you can use netbeans. This is another great IDE, it is not nearly as versitile as Eclipse IMO, but it is a really good alternative if you want to work in a framework that is not eclipse's. You're not going to find much better, the only other thing I can say that hasn't been covered here is that it's free!
