Topic awaiting preservation: Understanding Rss Feeds (Page 1 of 1)

I've been toying around with rss feeds a bit and I might be wrong, but it seems that rss feeds are exclusively news headlines or titles.. I was wondering if somethng like this exists:

A mortgage company site: wants to have the current daily mortgage rates on their site, that updates automatically when the rates change.

Would such a rss feed exist that you could link to and it would update automatically from that feed?

A sporting site: updates the daily scores automatically from a site that has this feed.

Or am I understanding correctly. Where would you find these type of feeds? A google search lead me to news headlines and articles, but no other type of changable data...

Generally (particularly in regards to the sports) these realtime feeds are via some form of a pay service. Such as ESPN's Sports Ticker

I don't know where to get mortgage information. But basically I think much of what you want will come from some form of a pay service. AP (Associated Press) provides these services for a bunch of topics.

Basically although it has been used for blog feeds or news headlines it can be used for all sorts of things.

It may be that some further RDF modules might be used but you could easily cram any of those examples into a feed.

Also if you can't get a feed you can scrape a site and create a feed from this - its a bit naughty but a lot of people do it.

I'm not sure how you would "scrape" a site and create a feed. Can you elaborate on this?

Basically you'd set up a script that would grab a page and then process it removing the data you are after and storing it somewhere. A few regular expressions and you are laughing.

You'd not obviously want to do this every time a feed is called (the page owner probbaly wouldn't be happy for starters) but if the info was update once a day then it is doable. It might be worth your while dropping them a line and suggest they create an RSS feed out of their content though However, if they don't hen it is an option.
