Topic awaiting preservation: Google set to unveil £115 PC (Page 1 of 1)

Got this from a friend this morning. No source attriibution.... but very interesting... if true.

INTERNET heavyweight Google is understood to be planning an assault on the PC market with an entry-level computer that could sell for as little as $200 (£115).

Google co-founder Larry Page is expected to reveal details this Friday when he delivers the keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The company is thought to have formed a partnership with US-based Wyse Technology, which will provide the hardware. Google will provide software for the PC, allowing it to function without the need for Microsoft software.

While the computer terminal is likely to be relatively limited in what it can do, users will access applications such as a word-processor or spreadsheet via a central network. Such a structure is said to significantly reduce the risk of exposure to computer viruses and reduces the cost of the individual PC terminals.

Last month, it emerged that Google is to spend $1 billion (£569 million) to take a five per cent stake in Time Warner's AOL internet business as part of a major strategic alliance.

The deal deepens the ties binding two of the web's most popular sites while thwarting Microsoft's efforts to grab a larger slice of the internet advertising market.

Intel has been selling the "farmer pc" in rural China, Linux based, something they can't do over here for the M$ pressure, MIT has the $100 laptop goin, now Google's rumored to be doing this (I've also heard that they've denied it as well).

Things are certain, Linux is coming on! With the "web is the computer" movement, cheap hardware running Linux is lookin poised innit?!?

There actually is a goal to develop a $100 computer with a monocrome/color screen that can be recharged by a hand crank.

This computer will according to plans not be sold but donated to villages in 3rd world countries in order to spread computer knowledge to ppl that can't afford it.

I'll see what I can dig up more on this.

It includes Google Earth, Desktop search, Toolbars, Picasa, a photo screensaver, Ad-aware, Adobe Reader, half a year's worth of Norton's AV protection and, of course, ... Firefox!

I'd most probably not have it install the toolbars and the Norton thing, but other than that, not bad at all. Cool to finally see them spread Firefox.

And even if I'm not going to give it a try right away it'll surely come in handy for the next Windows installations...

Even though the article has been debunked, the above quote seems to hark back to the days of mainframes and terminals.

So if anyone actually decides to follow that paradigm we will have come full circle in as far as the computer age is concerned.

anyone with any doubt that the-internet-is-the-computer and that most if not all things will migrate that way should give it all some more thought

apps are moving to the internet and devices connect to the internet to get at them, all kinds of devices...
