I've been working on a few large images recently. In the one that this is derived from I have been playing at getting a good voloumetric light. After a couple of days trial and error I am beginning to like the results.
The large image is far from finished, but as I worked on the masks I liked the effect (viewed in the little new window I opened, thanks eyezaer). of switching between the various depths of light layers.
I suppose this could be worked up to a sig but I'm concentrating on the large image atm, heh (big picture)
The next thing I plan to work on is the walls, need to get them looking a lot more grimey, with cracks and perhaps an odd ornament.
Any thoughts?

no thoughts... but heck that's a good start!
How big is the "big picture"? seems like there are a lot of details in that pic.

Larger version

[doh]meant to make the animated one have clickage[/doh]
Thanks Dms. The image I am working on is twice the size of the linked image (2084x????) I am working on two versions, with one I am going for a more realistic feel and the other fantasy perhaps.
One approach I may take with the walls is to try to photograph as many suitable ones as I can then study them, may even use them directly as a bump map or texture.

Oh and yeah standard wall texture thingy with Lighting Effects perhaps? (just meremberd)

Tao- send me an email at *myNick*@gmail.com and I'll send you a pic I used to have as my background that I call 'psychoward'. It's dirty and might be the kind of look you might need for your wall...

Tao, that shock chair is beautiful!
Looks really old, used and rusty

Is this all really 2D photoshop? The perspectives on that chair and the shadows feels so... right for a PS drawing.

Spot on Dms I started all this off as a project to teach myself a little bit of Bryce a while back. I have always been a bit dissapointed with the results I get from Bryce so I decided rather than blame the programmme I would delve in a bit more.
I did not realise it has huge potential.
When I tried to render anything with volumetric light my machine just chokes, "The ol' CPU cannot take it captain!" For instance I shrunk a similar image I was working on in Bryce to the dimensions of a sig, about 150x100 px. This took over two hours to render even with a plain grey background.
It was about this time that I thought I'd try to get the lighting effect in Photoshop, mmmmmmmmm, photoshop . So I just imported the chair from bryce as it would take days for me to get near that level of detail and my focus here was initially on the light.
Then the magic of being on learning journeys like this strikes, and I find that chair that I lashed in as an after thought, looks good and could be used in other projects.
Thanks for all the thoughts they are always appreciated.

Nice work Tao. Well done.
Only nit is that the light box on the floor may be a bit sharp-edged, and could use a bit more prespective distortion, but very nice piece. Love the texture on the wall.

Thanks db, I've been debating about that light on the floor for a few days now. I think I will try a graduated blur increasing from right to left as it moves away from the source.
The wall took a lot more twiddling than I initially thought. but I am starting to get the hang of a method I like. The other wall and floor need to have a sense of perspective in them.
I have started on the floor but may redo. I have tried to place scrapes on the floor where the chair has been dragged to its present position.

I'm in danger of forgetting that I actually want to finish this image. I've had such a good time trying out different methods of making and applying textures. I'm not really happy with the windowed wall texture here. I mean it is ok but I don't know if it fits or not.
I still need to roughen up the rest, I have worked seperately on the floors and walls and I think it shows, so I'll try to assimilate the whole (assimilate the whole?)

Thanks Tom.
I started this thread off thinking I was going to concentrate on the lighting aspect, and I still plan to work on that. As often happens when we start off on one path, we end up meandering down a few others. I've spent more time working on the walls in this image thaan I did on the ones in my flat.
It's nightime in the cell here.
I have to go foraging in the concrete jungle today, could be away for a few days so I don't think I'll be updating untill I'm nearer the finished artical.
[doh]fixing linkage[/doh]
[dohdoh]Heh, just realised I did not mean to leave the cracks out of the last image, I liked the cracks. Silly me. [/dohdoh]

...and so to bed...

Great work, Tao. I was wondering what happened to that old chair of mine. I see you stole it as your model.
